The City of San Clemente is seeking a qualified individual to serve as an Electrical Instrumentation Technician I/II . This position performs a variety of assignments in the maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical equipment, including reclaimed and potable water and sewer systems, overhauls, constructs, and salvages electrical machinery and equipment, and performs tasks related to the assigned area of responsibility. The City of San Clemente reserves the option to hire at either the Electrical Instrumentation Technician I ($38.51 - $46.40 hourly) or II level ($43.49 - $52.86 hourly) based on candidate qualifications and selection process. Scheduled Salary Increases: Effective July 2026 - 3.0% Effective July 2027 - 2.5% Note: This position is "Open Until Filled" . Distinguishing Characteristics Work assignments are allocated based on scope, difficulty, and certification levels. Technician I is entry-level, supervised closely, with less independence. Technician II performs full journey-level duties independently, exercising judgment and initiative, and is typically promoted from Technician I or hired with prior experience. Essential functions include repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, installing, and constructing electrical machinery and systems, including water and sewer systems and data communication systems. Tasks involve installing conduit, wiring, process controls, calibrating instrumentation, troubleshooting communication systems, reading blueprints, operating equipment, estimating resources, responding to emergencies, and performing related duties. Knowledge of: electrical construction principles, maintenance techniques, safety practices, electrical theory, the National Electrical Code, and electronic systems repair. Ability to: learn electrical principles, operate equipment safely, read schematics, follow instructions, communicate effectively, troubleshoot electronic systems, and work independently. Experience and Education: Technician I requires two years of electrical maintenance experience and completion of high school plus relevant coursework or trade school. Certification in CWEA Grade I within 12 months is required. Technician II requires three years of responsible electrical maintenance experience and CWEA Grade II certification within 12 months. Valid Class C driver’s license is required for both. Special Requirements: Respond to emergencies, participate in after-hours and on-call duties, and respond within 45 minutes. Working Conditions: Work involves indoor and outdoor environments, exposure to water, sewage, noise, chemicals, and physical hazards, including work at heights and in confined spaces.
