Job DescriptionJob Description Staff Backend Engineer We're looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to help build the core infrastructure behind an AI-powered platform for clinicians. In this role, you’ll design and scale critical backend systems that support healthcare providers in real-time, high-stakes environments. You’ll work across the AI stack to drive architectural decisions, lead high-impact product initiatives, and shape the long-term technical strategy for platform reliability and performance. Healthcare experience isn't required—we value engineers with fast-paced startup experience and a strong technical foundation. About the Role As a Staff Software Engineer on the AI Platform team, you’ll be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure that powers daily workflows for clinicians using the platform. You'll work alongside some of the brightest minds in AI and contribute to cutting-edge advancements in the field. In your first six months, your focus will be laying the groundwork for long-term platform success. That includes investing in observability, scalability, and reliability. As a senior technical leader, you’ll own the end-to-end lifecycle of major initiatives—from architectural design through production deployment. Location This is a hybrid role based in San Francisco. Engineering team members are expected in-office three days per week. What You’ll Do Design and build core backend systems using the latest AI advancements to power exceptional user experiences Proactively identify performance bottlenecks and re-architect systems before they impact users Lead high-impact product and infrastructure initiatives that accelerate iteration and prevent technical debt Uphold high coding standards and contribute to engineering processes that promote quality, speed, and innovation What We're Looking For 5+ years of experience building and scaling backend systems, particularly in high-growth or zero-to-one environments Deep knowledge of modern infrastructure, including cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), Docker, Kafka, and Postgres Proven track record of end-to-end execution—from idea to impactful delivery Experience mentoring engineers, driving high-quality execution, and fostering strong engineering culture Comfortable operating in fast-moving, ambiguous environments with a collaborative, idea-driven mindset A team player who values kindness, support, and building with purpose
