The Impact Finance & Markets Division (IFM) at The Nature Conservancy (TNC) provides technical and strategic leadership to create transformational impact with the private sector by translating the value of nature and conservation approaches into actionable, science-based strategies that can help solve societal challenges. The Corporate Engagement (CE) team, one of three business units in the Impact Finance & Markets Division, provides technical leadership to translate the value of nature and conservation into actionable and standards-aligned strategies for companies across the world.

The Nature Conservancy understands the critical role of the private sector in solving the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. The organization has built an effective approach to corporate sustainability, working with industry-leading companies across the globe to help them integrate sustainability into their business models, create more resilient supply chains, and ultimately change how companies value nature. TNC works with many of the largest companies on earth across the agrifood sector and beyond, from input suppliers to grocery retailers and traders in between. Our engagement with multi-stakeholder groups creates new standards and accelerates private sector action with a goal of transforming markets globally.

The Managing Director, Corporate Engagement is the senior executive who supports TNC’s overall corporate engagement programs focused on harnessing the power of the private sector in service of conservation. The Managing Director reports to the Global Head, Impact Finance & Markets and provides leadership, management, coordination with other TNC business units, and vision necessary to ensure that The Nature Conservancy has optimal strategies to effectively influence corporate practices to ensure the accomplishment of TNC’s conservation results. They will adjust and drive forward the team's strategy to advance work with priority sectors and companies in alignment with TNC's 2030 Goals. The Managing Director will work across the IFM Division to develop larger market transformational pathways, and across TNC to identify work in the corporate sector that will have largest impact on the ground.

The ideal candidate will be based in the Arlington, VA area. We will also consider candidates located across the United States or in eligible European locations where The Nature Conservancy operates (including Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom), provided they are near a major airport.

We’re Looking For You

The Managing Director, Corporate Engagement will act as a leader for a skilled team of approximately 40 people, working in close collaboration with companies in the food, agriculture, consumer, technology, and financial services industries. They will serve as the strategic leader for the team and critical external presence for our corporate engagement work, which includes partnerships with over 500 companies across TNC. The Managing Director will sit on the Impact Finance and Markets divisional leadership team and contribute to the overall divisional strategy.

Responsibilities & Scope

Leads the Corporate Engagement Team and orchestrates the work of numerous TNC field-based offices in corporate engagement efforts. Leads the development and management of private-sector partnerships; develops strategies to influence the practices of business and commerce leaders. Represents TNC in the corporate sustainability community, advocating for the highest impact interventions achievable. Negotiates complex, high profile or sensitive agreements. Delivers effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to employee groups, managers at all levels, board members, and outside organizations. Creates and communicates a compelling vision for Corporate Engagement across TNC. Manage, mentor, and energize a team of approximately 40 professionals, including managing ~five direct reports. Oversee and manage the $6M- $10M team budget and be responsible for $10M dollars of revenue generation, which could come in the form of philanthropy or contractual revenue. Negotiates and creates joint strategies with priority pathways and programs across TNC to create partnerships with the biggest impact on the ground. Will require both domestic and international travel (up to 30%) and flexibility to work outside normal business hours as needed.

What You’ll Bring

Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 7 years of experience as a leader in the conservation arena, non-profit sector, advocacy, or related corporate area. Experience working with companies. Extensive and proven management experience, including the ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, and manage the performance of a large multi-disciplinary team. Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, board members, employees, outside partners, or equivalent. Proven experience working collaboratively and effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization. Experience in fundraising, budget management, and business development. Written and verbal fluency in English.

Desired Qualifications

15 years’ experience as a proven leader in the conservation arena, non-profit sector, advocacy, or related corporate area, including demonstrated experience producing results and meeting program/department goals. Experience gained both in and outside the U.S. preferred. Demonstrated commitment to developing and practicing global literacy a must. High energy, forward thinking, creative individual with high ethical standards. Outstanding leadership and visionary qualities. Proven technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and strong operational focus. Well organized and self-directed; politically savvy and a team player.

Salary Information

USA and Europe

This position may be based in the United States or Europe. Applicants in Europe must be based in a country where TNC has an established entity (UK, Germany, or Belgium), taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times.

For U.S. based applicants only , the starting pay range for this position is generally within the range of $263,000- $325,000 for annual base salary and is based on location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA.

For applicants based in Europe, pay ranges will be in local currency, the pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate’s qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
