Description
This position provides clinical support to the patients of SIU Family and Community Medicine-Quincy. The majority of time is spent in the capacity of Medical Assistant (Credentialed/Certified) where patient care is given within the clinic. This position must work closely with faculty, residents, staff and patients to ensure an efficient operation.
SIU School of Medicine does not participate in the E-Verify program. Employment eligibility will be verified in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
Examples of Duties
Clinical Support 80%
1. Prepares patient for exam, escorting patient to room.
2. Takes vitals and history of present illness of the patient, recording in chart.
3. Follow SIU scribing guidelines when scribing office visits for providers.
4. Assist doctors at time of exam and with follow-up procedures.
5. Assist with preparation of medications and treatment with direct supervision of ordering provider.
6. Assist doctors with telephone messages.
7. Follows-up on doctor's orders by transcribing these in charts and notifying the pharmacy when appropriate.
8. Assist in the operation of respiratory equipment when necessary and explains operation to patient, i.e. nebulizer and pulmonary function test.
9. Records prescription refills and other pertinent medical information in patients' charts per phone conversations or through personal contacts.
10. Following a medical provider's orders, enters into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) requisitions of medicines, laboratory and radiology.
11. Takes walk-in blood pressures and records in charts.
12. Performs EKG's, pulmonary functions test, spirometry, pulse oximetry, visual testing, audiograms, retinal testing, nebulizer treatments, ear irrigations, obstetric non-stress test and external fetal monitoring.
13. Constant updating on computer information availability, including the electronic health record system, insurance information and patient education.
14. After a competency check off, administer injections to patients.
15. Cross-training for lab help and needs as necessary.
16. Discharge patients, prepares requisitions for laboratory tests, and schedule procedures/tests/appointments as needed and directed by nurse or provider.
17. Clean/Disinfect/Sterilize equipment according to Department and SIU guidelines/policies/procedures.
18. Notify patients of normal test results only - via phone or standardized letter with direction from nurse or provider.
19. Under provider supervision via direct approval or written department protocol, educate patients about a diagnosis or treatment using department approved education and reading it verbatim. Refers patient to nurse with questions.
20. Other duties as assigned.
Clerical/Reception Duties 20%
1. Maintains patient files and medical records.
2. Calls other facilities to set up appointments for x-rays or referral to another physician.
3. Completes appropriate insurance referral forms for patient to take to specialist.
4. Functions as a receptionist as needed; schedule appointments, answer phones, task messages to nursing/providers.
5. Places patient information in physicians' boxes.
6. Mails or faxes patient information to outside physicians and hospitals.
7. Cleans and sterilizes equipment and supplies.
8. Complete periodic resident evaluations.
9. Receives and stores new supplies as needed.
Qualifications
  1. High school graduation or equivalent
  2. Possession of a current /valid assistant certification by an approved certifying board as defined by the employing institution
