Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Licensed Pharmacist and according to law, policy, and standard procedures dispenses and delivers medications and pharmaceutical supplies. Compounds sterile and non-sterile products as required. Fills orders, picks and delivers restocks for automated dispensing machines (ADMs); provides basic trouble shooting of ADMs; pre-packs both hazardous and non-hazardous medications; enters charges and credits into computer, makes rounds to deliver and return medications and IVs. As the Pharmacy Intern progresses through their college education, they will be provided the opportunity to participate in clinical monitoring and initiatives, under the supervision of a pharmacist. Example activities include renal dosage adjustment, pharmacokinetic dosing, IV to oral conversion, medication reconciliation, and attending patient rounds.
Responsibilities
ExpertiseActively learns and demonstrates expertise in the pharmacy intern role by staying abreast of departmental practices and policies, but consistently performing within the pharmacy practice act, and by displaying a consistent understanding of all required duties and the timeline for their completion. Demonstrates technical ability in managing the various pharmacy systems including the automatic dispensing machines, the pharmacy information system, the controlled substances safes, and the medications pre-packager. Maintains IV competency. Compounds sterile IV preparations per USP 797 and 800 guidelines. Follows all policies and procedures for sterile compounding. As the Pharmacy Intern reaches their third and fourth years of their college program, in addition to the duties listed above, begins to participate in clinical monitoring, medication reconciliation and patient rounds. A pharmacist must verify any activity that a pharmacy intern performs. Participates in additional departmental projects as available. Customer ServiceActively learns and performs job duties in a manner to consistently improve the patient experience. Assists the nursing staff with coordinating medication therapy to meet individual needs. Contributes to the efficient availability of the right medication at the right time for our patients. Demonstrates organizational skills and plans ahead. Exhibits effective problem-solving skills in dealing with customer needs. Minimizes error in dose calculations, labeling, and dispensing.
