Summary:
The Phlebotomy Coordinator is responsible for the leadership of the laboratory phlebotomy team's performance. Responsibilities include but are not limited to serving as a role model demonstrating a positive service oriented attitude with compassion, empathy and kindness, and as a laboratory liaison for questions related to laboratory operations. The Coordinator demonstrates the expertise and proficiency with the performance of the wide range of phlebotomy duties per laboratory procedure, to include, venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick procedures on patients ranging from neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric; therapeutic phlebotomies; blood culture collections; glucose tolerances; bedside glucose testing and quality control; and a resource for difficult collections throughout the house. Responsible for monitoring the correct labeling of tube and specimens; accessing patient venipuncture site appearance with appropriate chart documentation as needed; overseeing that laboratory results are placed on the correct patient's chart(s); monitoring venipuncture supply expiration dates and utilization; the auditing of laboratory tests performed with physician written orders. The Phlebotomy Coordinator is responsible for the monthly downloading of bedside glucose controls, and the oversight of quarterly proficiency testing. The review and updating of on-line phlebotomy procedures is an expectation.
Requires independent judgment and a high degree of accountability as errors can be life threatening. The Phlebotomy Coordinator assists in phlebotomy orientation and training of new team members.
Duties are performed independently of other supervision. The Phlebotomy Coordinator takes a part in the hiring of new team members and evaluation and counseling of team members.
Requirements:
Associate's degree in a health science field or an equivalent of five years of hospital phlebotomy experience. At least two years of supervisory experience is required. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and have initiative and sound judgment. Requires computer literacy. Training can be provided on hospital and laboratory information systems.

Valid and active Phlebotomy licensure
AHA BLS required
