This work unit exists to reduce the impact of avalanches on the people that live, work, travel, and recreate in the Colorado mountains and promote avalanche safety in planning, recreation, industry, and transportation through a program of forecasting and education. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is a program of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. Our mission is to provide avalanche information, education, and promote research for the protection of life, property, and the enhancement of the state's economy. The CAIC has eight offices throughout the state and 33 employees. The group provides daily mountain weather and avalanche forecasts for backcountry regions and transportation corridors, and works in a close partnership with the Colorado Department of Transportation. The CAIC also provides snow and avalanche education to groups ranging from elementary school to university students, and work-place safety training for a variety of industries. Description of Job Field Technician- CAIC is hiring field technicians to focus on the following areas and potentially based in the following locations: Never Summer Mountains, west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, Cameron Pass Possible locations: Walden, Grand Lake, Fraser
Pikes Peak, Sangre de Cristo Mountains, southern Sawatch Range Possible locations: Leadville, Salida, Canyon City, Westcliff, Colorado Springs
Grand Mesa and Flat Tops Mountains Possible locations: Grand Junction, Rifle, Carbondale, Paonia
Southern San Juan Mountains Possible Locations: Del Norte, Pagosa Springs, Creede, Durango
These field technician positions will work both independently and with other CAIC forecasting staff to collect field data to support the backcountry avalanche forecasting program. Essential Job Functions
Participate in CAIC field operations, including risk management and fieldwork coordination Collect field data on snow, weather and avalanche conditions Work with forecasters to analyze snow, weather, and avalanche observations and determine current and future trends in avalanche danger Write accessible and technically accurate field reports and gather supporting media content Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights Notes:
This position will require backcountry winter travel in all types of terrain. The employee will supply appropriate clothing and travel equipment. This position will require winter driving. When state vehicles are not available, the employee will supply an appropriate vehicle for winter travel. Employees are eligible for state travel reimbursement. Workload is ~20 hours/week, and may include weekends, early morning and evening hours. Compensation is an hourly wage and does not include any benefit package. Qualifications (minimum)
Must be at least 18 years of age Must have a current & valid driver's license and reliable transportation Must be willing and able to work outside, which may include inclement weather Strong interpersonal skills to deliver excellent customer service Ability to work with the general public in person, by phone, and via email Strong work ethic and attention to detail Dependable team player Strong written communication skills Ability to use web and mobile applications Certificate of completion - Recreational Level 1 avalanche course Certificate of completion - Avalanche Rescue course Current, or ability to obtain, CPR and First-Aid certifications (Wilderness First-Aid or higher preferred) Experience observing and recording snow, weather, and avalanches using Snow Weather and Avalanche Guidelines (SWAG) Ability to safely travel in snow-covered mountainous terrain. Experience riding snowmobiles on and off trail is preferred. Ability to safely travel on snow-covered mountainous highways Strong photo and video collection skills Ability to pass a motor vehicle records check in accordance with DNR policy Ability to pass a background check Qualifications (desired) Professional avalanche training: Pro 1 avalanche certification or higher American Avalanche Association pro membership Experience with photo and video editing Experience with public outreach and avalanche education
Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.
