Position Overview The
Vocabulary & Ontology Specialist
will join the Master Vocabularies Group of a major pharmaceutical R&D division. This team plays a critical role in curating, standardizing, and maintaining terminological frameworks to ensure clean, consistent data flow across drug development systems and clinical trials. You’ll collaborate with scientists, data managers, and IT teams to optimize how data is described, connected, and reused—ensuring accuracy, compliance, and interoperability across systems.
Key Responsibilities Maintain and enhance reference vocabularies, master data, and controlled terminology used across clinical and regulatory systems. Develop and manage taxonomies, ontologies, and metadata schemas to standardize terminology (e.g., adverse events, compound data, trial outcomes). Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align vocabulary design with evolving business and scientific needs. Conduct gap analyses of existing terminology and recommend improvements or consolidation. Create supporting documentation and training materials for internal teams. Support the onboarding of new systems or vocabulary-driven tools (e.g., SPI-Hub, CKM).
Qualifications 5+ years of experience in vocabulary/ontology management, terminology services, or metadata in a clinical, pharma, or life sciences environment Strong understanding of scientific data standards and clinical trial vocabularies Experience with tools and platforms for ontology management, metadata repositories, or master data systems Excellent communication skills; ability to work cross-functionally with scientists, librarians, and data governance teams Advanced degree in Library Science, Bioinformatics, Information Science, or a related discipline preferred
