Job Description: The Medical Assistant at Dignity Health is responsible for providing a basic level of patient care and treatment, assists with obtaining vital signs, documents chief complaint, and all actions taken. Alert physician of problems/concerns/abnormalities. Assists with obtaining patient history, assists physicians and residents and/or licensed nursing personnel. Performs simple patient procedures, sets up exam/procedure rooms including instruments for minor procedures, prepares and may include administrating medications (excluding IV), and draws blood under the direct supervision of a physician.

Obtains lab specimens and fills out requisitions completely and accurately. In addition to the above, the Medical Assistant II functions more independently and coordinates the workflow of MAs when necessary. Obtains authorization for referral (normally in small clinics). Conducts front desk duties such as registration, check-in, and scheduling of patients. Schedules for inpatient and outpatient surgeries and procedures with the clinic, OR, OPSC, and Endoscopy.

Qualifications:

High School diploma/GED. Graduated from an approved Medical Assistant Program or completion of a U.S. Armed Forces medical services training program. The Basic Life Support (BLS-CPR) from the American Heart Association (AHA). Responsibilities:

Maintains hospital standards of zero tolerance for mislabeled specimens and collects laboratory specimens according to hospital protocol Assists the nurse/physician during examinations, treatments, and procedures as requested Retrieves necessary equipment and supplies Assists in patient/equipment preparation Performs follow-up actions as directed Completes hospital forms per protocol Documents clinically relevant findings in the patient's record according to hospital protocols and clinical protocols Monitors and records patient vital signs, weight, positioning, ADL's I&O activity, and blood glucose readings per RN instructions, hospital protocols, and standards of care Records readings in an accurate and timely manner Assists with patient admission, discharge, and transfer Initiates orders according to SJHMC time performance standards 5 minutes, Discharge/Transfer- within 10 minutes, Routine- within 30 minutes Conducts front desk duties as needed (check-in, registrations, scheduling appointments). Obtains authorization and referrals as needed Complete full patient registration in IDX when registering new patients. Ensure all patient information is updated and current when following up/interacting with patients. Verify insurance eligibility and/or benefits. Connects with and establishes relationships with the patient and their family/caregivers to enhance the patient's experience. Reports significant observed or reported alterations in the patient's condition to the RN, physician, supervisor, or nurse manager Maintains an awareness of the physiological, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of each patient and communicates with RN, Physician, Social Worker/Case Management, and/or Chaplain Services as appropriate
