Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Nurse Educator specializing in the Operating Room (OR) is a professional nurse prepared at the Baccalaureate or higher level. The OR educator reports directly to the Director of Nursing Education & Professional Development and collaborates with the Director of Nursing for the Operating Room. The OR educator is responsible for the education, training, and mentorship of nursing and ancillary staff in the surgical environment. This role involves developing and delivering educational programs that focus on OR practices, sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and patient safety. The Nurse Educator must possess clinical expertise in the OR and ensure that nursing staff is trained on best practices, operating room protocols, and the use of surgical technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design and develop educational content tailored to the specific needs of nursing staff working in the Operating Room. Ensure that training materials cover key OR topics, including aseptic techniques, surgical instrument handling, patient positioning, anesthesia care, and post-operative care. Develop and update training modules on advanced technologies, surgical procedures, and patient safety protocols. Provide both classroom and hands-on training for OR nursing staff, students, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring the acquisition of essential skills and knowledge required for safe and effective OR practices. Conduct surgical simulations, demonstrations, and practical skills sessions focused on the setup, preparation, and sterile techniques in the OR. Deliver educational sessions on emergency protocols, infection control measures, and patient safety procedures specific to the operating room environment. Function as an expert clinician within the OR, demonstrating competency in assisting with surgical procedures, positioning patients, and ensuring proper sterile techniques. Model and reinforce best practices for OR nurses, such as infection prevention, maintaining a sterile field, and managing surgical instruments. Provide guidance and supervision during surgeries to nursing staff and students, ensuring they perform tasks accurately and in alignment with protocols. Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment to Nurse Educator Level I 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and 2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and 3. A Master's Degree in Nursing, or a related nursing or education field, from an accredited college or university; and 4. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse in specialty area(s), including: a. One (1) year providing nursing education and training in specialty area(s); or b. Holds a valid and current certification as a Nurse Educator.

For Assignment to Nurse Educator Level II 1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Nurse Educator Level I, must be assigned to a highly specialized area (e.g., critical care, emergency services, perioperative care) or to a group of specialty areas.
