The Senior Sales & Use Tax Accountant plays a crucial role in the organization by managing and ensuring compliance with sales and use tax regulations. This position involves a combination of accounting, tax analysis, reporting, and auditing responsibilities.

Job Summary:

The Senior Sales & Use Tax Accountant is responsible for overseeing all aspects of sales and use tax compliance and reporting. This includes analyzing transactions, preparing and filing tax returns, conducting audits, and ensuring adherence to state and local tax regulations. The role requires a strong understanding of tax laws and excellent attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and submission of sales and use tax returns.
  • Stay updated on changes in tax laws and regulations, and adjust compliance procedures accordingly.
  • Monitor and reconcile sales tax accounts and ensure appropriate documentation for exemptions and credits.

Tax Analysis and Reporting:

  • Analyze sales transactions to determine tax liability, exemptions, and credits.
  • Prepare and maintain records of tax calculations, payments, and refunds.
  • Generate reports summarizing tax liabilities and trends for management and external stakeholders.

Auditing and Internal Controls:

  • Conduct periodic internal audits to identify potential compliance issues and rectify them.
  • Collaborate with external auditors during sales and use tax audits and provide requested documentation.
  • Develop and implement internal controls to minimize tax-related risks and errors.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, providing guidance on sales and use tax matters.
  • Collaborate with accounting, finance, and legal departments to ensure tax compliance in various business operations.
  • Assist with resolving tax-related inquiries and issues from government authorities.

Research and Documentation:

  • Conduct research on complex tax issues and provide guidance on their resolution.
  • Maintain detailed records and documentation related to tax transactions, filings, and correspondence.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in sales and use tax accounting, with a strong understanding of tax laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency in using tax software and financial management systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of state and local tax regulations specific to the organization's operations is a plus.
  • Experience with audit defense and negotiation with tax authorities is beneficial.
