About the Role The Vice President of Commercial Lending is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight of the credit union’s commercial lending programs, including commercial real estate (CRE) and small business lending (SBL). This role leads the origination, underwriting, and portfolio management functions, ensuring high-quality loan production, sound credit practices, and strong relationship development. The VP will play a key role in shaping business development strategies, managing risk, coaching a high-performing team, and ensuring the lending function aligns with the credit union’s growth and service objectives. 17BC Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Lending Oversight Lead and manage the commercial lending division, including CRE and SBL originations, underwriting, and portfolio management. Develop and execute strategies to grow the commercial portfolio with sound, well-structured, and competitively priced loans and deposit products that align with the credit union’s asset, yield, and risk goals. Collaborate with executive leadership to define loan growth, deposit and interchange fee targets and support enterprise-wide strategic initiatives across both sides of the balance sheet. Team Management & Development Set clear goals and performance expectations for commercial lending staff; monitor progress and hold team members accountable for production and portfolio quality. Provide coaching, training, and mentoring to support professional development and succession planning. Foster a high-performance culture centered on member service, risk management, and relationship-based lending. Partner with the VP of Lending and Credit Administration to ensure consistency in underwriting, structuring, pricing, and portfolio management practices. Oversee credit risk within the commercial portfolio by maintaining effective loan review, monitoring, and covenant compliance processes. Ensure all loans adhere to internal policy, regulatory standards, and risk appetite. Business Development & Market Engagement Build and maintain a robust commercial pipeline through direct management of a production team focused on proactive relationship management and continuous prospecting. Represent the credit union in community and industry organizations such as chambers of commerce, realtor boards, and trade associations. Collaborate with Marketing, Branch Operations, and Business Development to align commercial lending efforts with overall brand and service strategy. Operational Excellence & Reporting Recommend and implement technology, process, and system improvements to enhance responsiveness and efficiency in commercial lending. Regularly report on loan production, pipeline activity, portfolio performance, and strategic initiatives to senior leadership. Lead the development and enhancement of commercial loan products and services to meet evolving market needs. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field required. Advanced degree (MBA or similar) preferred. Must maintain compliance with all regulations. Experience Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in commercial or business lending, underwriting, and/or portfolio management. Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience managing lending teams with a track record of driving results, developing talent, and leading through change. Strong knowledge of commercial real estate lending, small business lending, loan structures, and regulatory frameworks. Demonstrated ability to analyze financial statements, tax returns, and collateral valuations to assess creditworthiness. Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills. Strong strategic thinking, organizational, and decision-making capabilities. Proficient in commercial lending software, Microsoft Office Suite, and credit analysis tools. High degree of professionalism, integrity, and alignment with the credit union’s core values. Supervisory Responsibilities This position directly supervises commercial lending staff and is responsible for building an engaged, results-driven team that supports the credit union’s vision and mission. The VP must demonstrate effective delegation, cross-functional collaboration, and leadership aligned with organizational values. Working conditions This position will be required to work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, and, with or without reasonable accommodation is required: Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machines. Constantly positions self in work environment. The person in this position frequently communicates with peers, supervisors, vendors, and employees to exchange accurate information and answer questions. Must be able to detect objects at a distance. On occasion will move up to 20 pounds of office objects. Moderate local travel between KCU facilities and occasional travel outside the local area may be required. Works in an indoor office environment but expected to attend meetings in buildings that require travel in outdoor weather conditions.
