This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Duties

The Gastroenterologist is responsible for ensuring the quality and timeliness of services provided, customer satisfaction, and compliance with standards of accrediting bodies such as the Joint Commission and the Inspector General's Combined Assessment Program. They will ensure appropriate use of resources and uphold the standards of care in Specialty Service and Surgery, collaborating with other services as appropriate. The Gastroenterologist may be asked to complete projects related to their specialty, expertise, and interests, aligned with VA directives and policies. Projects may be directly related to gastroenterology or occasionally related to general medical practice, including leading administrative or clinical teams within the VA. The role supports the healthcare delivery mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs and involves travel to Community Based Outpatient Clinics as needed.

Functions:

The Gastroenterologist must be a licensed physician who has completed an appropriate residency or fellowship. Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required. Responsibilities include evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and consulting on adult patients with gastrointestinal diseases, including conditions of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas, gallbladder/biliary system, and liver. They will order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, develop management plans, and perform routine procedures such as paracentesis and anoscopy. Providing patient education on diagnosis and medication management is essential. The role also involves supervising and teaching medical students, residents, and trainees. Core procedures include, but are not limited to, endoscopy, colonoscopy, and other specialized gastroenterology interventions.
