The CEO of the Sacramento Zoo will report to the Board of Trustees of the Sacramento Zoological Society and is responsible for advancing the mission and vision of the Zoo through comprehensive oversight of the Zoo's operations, experiences, and programming; passionate advocacy of animal welfare and conservation issues; and active engagement of all stakeholders.
Through both word and deed, the CEO will be instrumental in creating and fostering a collegial, dynamic, and optimistic culture among and between Zoo leadership, staff, and the Board, motivating high productivity and engagement by conveying passion for and belief in the Zoo and its overarching conservation message.
With responsibility for the overall financial health of the Zoo, the CEO will work closely with the executive team to determine and execute plans and strategies that support operations, promote visitation, and provide the highest standards of care for the animals while advancing visionary goals and sharing critical conservation messages.
The CEO will work to ensure that the Zoo's reputation as a world-class zoological organization, conservation and animal welfare advocate, and community asset is bolstered through thoughtful and thorough planning for future facilities and programming needs.
It will be the CEO's responsibility to ensure that any future plans align with the Zoo's mission and goals, are communicated clearly and timely to the Board, and are integrated into a funding scenario supporting the Zoo's financial stability and sustainability.
With a visionary approach, the CEO will lead the development of both a strategic plan and a long-term campus plan to drive growth and innovation for a new century of excellence at the Sacramento Zoo.
Serving as the public face of the Zoo, especially with exciting new plans for the current campus, will be a key function of this position.
The CEO will play a vital role in fundraising through cultivating and soliciting major gifts, pursuing sponsorships, and identifying additional funding sources.
Building strategic partnerships with organizations, educational institutions, corporations, vendors, and other nonprofits in Sacramento and beyond is essential to advancing the Zoo's mission, reach, and impact, as well as exploring new revenue opportunities.
Experience Required
- Minimum 7 years in senior management at a zoo or similar organization
- Thorough knowledge of AZA standards
- Significant experience with and appreciation for high standards of animal care, guest experiences, and conservation education
- Proven success in fundraising (major gifts, capital campaigns, events, sponsorships)
- Strategic planning and facility development experience
- Business and financial management expertise
- Advanced degree (MBA, DVM, or similar) preferred but not required
Salary : Commensurate with experience.
