The ideal candidate has heavy civil construction experience including earthwork, paving, underground utilities, and concrete work. We work in both the private and public sectors, and having experience in both is preferred. This role works closely with the VP of Estimating to estimate and deliver quality bids on prospective projects in the Bay Area. The position also collaborates closely with field operations experts, takeoff engineers, and senior estimators on the team. The Estimator plays a key role in partnering with local owners, clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to deliver excellent results.

Typical Day for an Estimator:

  1. Prepare complete and timely estimates for assigned projects of medium to large size and complexity.
  2. Review proposal specifications, drawings, attend pre-bid meetings to determine scope of work and estimate contents.
  3. Prepare complete estimates by thoroughly reviewing takeoff materials provided by experienced takeoff engineers.
  4. Coordinate estimating efforts with the team relevant to bids/projects.
  5. Interface with owners, A/E’s, and other contractors to provide engineering and cost data regarding project budgets and feasibility.
  6. Support awarded contracts through job start-up and in-house meetings, communicating effectively with all team levels and escalating issues as per SOP guidelines.

The ideal candidate is trustworthy, detail-oriented, makes good decisions, and can work in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication skills, adherence to operating procedures, and proficiency with computer estimating tools (HCSS Heavybid, Bluebeam, AGTEK) are essential for success.

Qualifications include:

  • A 4-year construction management or engineering degree plus 5-7 years of technical training and/or experience.
  • Proficiency in estimating techniques, cost control, and interpreting computerized cost data and systems.
  • Knowledge of private, City, Caltrans, and Airport specifications, with a proven track record of completing contracts on time and within budget.
