Job Summary
The General Counsel provides legal advice to the President/Chief Executive Officer, senior management, and the Board of Directors. They are responsible for managing and overseeing legal affairs at the Health System, including Enterprise Risk Management, Insurance, Governance, and Accreditation, as well as Regulatory and Environment of Care functions.
Job Specific Duties
- Oversees legal and administrative functions related to Enterprise Risk and Claims management, ensuring policies and procedures address liability claims and risk prevention; actively manages claims.
- Provides counsel to the President/Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board regarding Board matters and staff meetings.
- Advises Health System personnel, medical staff, and the Bioethics Committee on bioethics and consent issues for minors.
- Provides legal counsel to the Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs on medical staff matters, credentialing, privileges, bylaws, licensure, and applicable laws.
- Retains, manages, and directs outside counsel to ensure competent and cost-effective legal representation.
- Manages the Contract Management function, reviewing and advising on contracts as needed.
- Oversees the Accreditation and Regulatory Department for regulatory compliance.
- Supervises the Environment of Care.
- Oversees Governance, supports the CEO and Board, and staffs all Board and committee meetings, serving as Principle for the Governance Committee.
- Provides legal counsel to all affiliate organizations of the System.
- Oversees all insurance policies and re-insurance for the System and affiliates, including professional, general liability, property, cyber, and special events insurance.
- Collaborates with the Compliance Department on all compliance-related legal matters.
- Supports the Privacy Officer and advises on privacy issues.
- Advises on structuring affiliations and relationships with the System and its affiliates.
- Provides legal support for employment issues related to TM&E.
- Offers legal guidance on government affairs.
- Oversees litigation involving the System and its affiliates.
- Provides legal counsel on research matters.
- Maintains in-house expertise in areas such as managed care, employment, research, compliance, privacy, telemedicine, real estate, intellectual property, and physician contracting.
- Manages third-party subpoenas and garnishments.
- Advises on NCH teaching programs and donor-related issues for the Foundation.
- Supports real estate, construction, IT, and corporate communications from a legal perspective.
- Provides legal advice on physician contracts and relationships.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited US Law School.
- Licensed to practice law in Florida.
- Board Certified in Health Law by the Florida Bar.
- Over 10 years of legal experience in the healthcare field.
