Primary Purpose:
Provide direct and consultative services to children according to their individual education plan. Serve as liaison with the medical profession. Consult with and train teachers and parents. Evaluate students and plan therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with students' ability to derive full benefit from the education program.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree in physical therapy or related program
Valid Texas license as a Physical Therapist granted by the Texas Board of Physical
Therapy Examiners
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of medical information and indications for physical therapy treatment
Skill in use of tests and measurements for assessing physical function
Ability to administer manual exercises and physical therapy function
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Experience as a physical therapist preferable, school setting preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Performs evaluations on students in areas of expertise and as approved by the licensing entity.
2. Provides a written report on students giving the nature of the problem to be treated and the degree of severity based on appropriate evaluations.
3. Attends ARD meetings for students to review evaluations or report on those who are receiving physical therapy services, as needed.
4. Contributes to the development of individual education plans for students for whom the ARD committee has recommended physical therapy services.
5. Prepares a written plan of therapy on each individual student receiving direct treatment or consultative services.
6. Documents student progress toward IEP goals through the use of six weeks reports and other appropriate forms.
7. Compiles, maintains, and submits all requested data necessary for special education records.
8. Implements direct treatment or consultative services for students as specified in each student's individual education plan.
9. Consults with teachers and parents regarding students' educational needs related to physical therapy services.
10. Provides consultation to teachers, aides, and parents concerning individual education plan implementation, maintenance, and evaluation.
11. Provides training to staff and family members involved with students who receive physical therapy services to assist them in providing a more successful educational environment for those students.
12. Determine need for adaptive equipment based on evaluation process or student contact. Order, maintain, adjust, or modify equipment as needed.
13. Regularly communicates with teachers, parents, and special education staff in regards to course of treatment, student progress, and/or need for further evaluations or equipment.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; frequent standing, stooping, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, heavy lifting, and moderate carrying. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
