Reports to the Director, Patient Care Services. Under the supervision of Clinical Manager and Anesthesia Coordinator provides technical support services. Performs a variety of anesthesia of anesthesia equipment, supply related tasks. Performs various anesthesia specialized treatment processes associate with the anesthetic patient care plan. Actively involved in interdepartmental communication and preparation of the surgical patient. Actively participates in the team approach that reflects a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm and mutual respect.

Supporting Surgical department by:
  • Assisting with patient care as directed by circulating nurse and physician.
  • Follows all standards regarding safety of all patients, family and staff.
  • Assists with placement of monitoring equipment to include EKG leads, blood pressure cuff and SPO2 monitor.
  • Utilizing sterile technique to assist with set up and insertion of central line placement.
  • Utilizing autoclaving equipment appropriately, performing associated record keeping and transfer of sterile supplies from the autoclave.
  • Assisting with positioning the patient and gathering positioning supplies.
  • Assisting with anesthesia intubation and extubation as directed by an anesthesiologist.
  • Performing IV Therapy activities such as observing the site, setting up IV solutions and discontinuing IV's under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Performing basic respiratory actives such as placing nasal cannula, ambo bag or facial mask.
  • May set up oxygen equipment at the bedside routinely and initiate oxygen on an emergency basis only.
  • Aiding with the operation of the center core by entering labs, specimens and x-rays as needed.
  • Documentation as indicated.
Maintains Anesthesia equipment by:
  • Understanding anesthesia equipment and the associated monitors and performing minor troubleshooting on the equipment.
  • Exchanging soda absorb and disassembling equipment for sterilization.
  • Cleaning and sterilizing ancillary supplies and equipment (i.e. LMAs, fiberoptic scopes, fiberoptic blades and handles).
Performs various care services necessary to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients by:
  • Assisting with admissions by setting up patient rooms, orienting patients to rooms, and recoding basic information.
  • Informing the care team about questions, requests, equipment/safety problems, and/or concerns expressed by the family members or visitors.
  • Placing and emptying foley catheters, performing surgical/procedural skin preps (clips, shaves, etc.) and applying skin products under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Responding appropriately and assisting in emergency or urgent patient care, as directed.
Supports the operation by:
  • Performing filing, copying, sorting and routing of mail, and attached reports/dictations to patient charts.
  • Maintaining supply levels by observing, reporting, ordering and stocking of supplies.
  • Ensuring services and supplies are appropriately charged to patients.
  • Maintaining a variety of record and reports for inventory and billing purposes.
  • Checking all emergency equipment, supplies, and oxygen tanks, as assigned.
  • Orienting staff to the routine of the unit and the location of supplies.
  • Assembling, testing, cleaning, and sterilizing all therapy and patient care equipment; performing minor equipment repairs when necessary.
Contributes to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Department by:
  • Performing the universal functions and responsibility of a patient care center.
  • Assist with patient laboratory tests and results including, but not limited to, ABGs, ACTs and other point of care tests.
  • Obtain blood products and pharmaceuticals assisting with preparation and delivery.
  • Maintain immediate availability to assist in routine and emergency procedures.
  • May act as a resource and role model for other anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, learners and other health care team members by providing technical guidance and instruction as appropriate.
  • May serve as an instructor/facilitator of educational in-services for anesthesia technicians and other health care team members. Ability work effectively and efficiently under pressure in a stressful environment, and often without relief. Ability to demonstrate knowledge relating to the anesthesia procedures in order to effectively anticipate the needs of the anesthesiologist. Ability to set priorities and respond appropriately to actual and/or potential life threatening situations. Communicate with patients while helping prepare them for anesthesia to explain procedures, allay fears and elicit patient cooperation. Participate in non-charged calming conversations.   • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
  • The above level of knowledge, skills and abilities are normally acquired through the successful completion of a college/technical program such as LPN, Paramedic or EMT. Clinical experience in the operating room preferred. Experience with anesthesia equipment and/or medical equipment preferred. Consideration will also be given to internal candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent and one to three years of clinical experience in an operating room. Certified Anesthesia Technician is preferred. Must complete anesthesia technologist certification (Cer.A.T.T.) within 3 years of hire.

Working Conditions
  • Works in a hospital environment with staff, patients, physicians and others with frequent changes in job demands, physical exertion and possible of exposure to biohazards.
  • Consequences of error in performance may result in patient injury or death, hospital risk, and/or financial loss.
Physical Demands
  • Demonstrates physical ability and stamina to perform the essential function of the position, including the ability to remain on feel and walk for long periods of time, to push wheelchairs and carts, to lift objects of at least 50 pounds and to position and lift patients of various sizes and weights depending on the unit complement, shift and client population of the area assigned.
  • May require the ability to do heavy work which requires the strength and stamina to hold or position objects for prolonged periods of time.
