Our part-time, union bus driver position starts at $25.11 for per hour. It increases to $25.51 on January 1, 2026, $26.79 at your 1-year anniversary and $28.70 at your 2-year anniversary. You are guaranteed 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. Training is 5 weeks long and paid at the starting wage of $25.11. Training is generally Monday through Friday during the day and lasts 5 weeks. After that, your schedule would be 24 hours per week-8 hours per day-on 3 days of your choosing (Monday through Sunday).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operates DTA buses in a manner that exemplifies standard DTA defensive driving principles and practices, is safety conscious and follows all DTA safety policies and procedures. Operates the bus in a manner that gives DTA customers a smooth and comfortable ride. Adheres to all traffic regulations.
  • Performs pre-trip safety and preventative maintenance inspection and reports the condition of the bus. Performs periodic inspections of the bus while in service and reports any noted defects and/or damage.
  • Provides DTA customers with reliable and professional service. Gives information regarding schedules, connections, system structure and operational characteristics.
  • Has a complete understanding of the DTA fare structure and collects all applicable fares.
  • Keeps dispatcher informed of all operational changes including, but not limited to, delays, mechanical problems, accidents, traffic congestion, passenger connections, load counts, passenger problems and other operational items.
  • Completes in a timely, correct and legible manner all required reporting forms to include day cards, load counts, survey forms, defect cards, accident and incident reports, leave request forms and other forms that may be required.
  • Follows all procedures as identified in the Bus Operator Manual, Station Rules, Operator Training Manual, Union Contract and Operational Memos
  • Regular, dependable attendance is critical for the successful performance of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous driving experience helpful, not required.
  • Must not have more than three moving violations within the previous three years.
  • Must have the ability to safely and efficiently operate and maneuver large transit buses in an urban environment under all types of traffic and weather conditions.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret written operational memos and detour information.
  • Must be able to write and fill out all necessary forms in a legible manner.
  • Must have excellent verbal communications skills in order to provide riders with information in a clear, concise and understandable manner.
  • Must have the ability to effectively deal with large numbers of customers of diverse ages, services, needs and expectations.
  • Must have a basic understanding of mechanical functions of the buses and the ability to identify mechanical malfunctions.
  • Must successfully complete the DTA New Bus Operator Training Program, which is 5 weeks long.
  • Must pass your behind the wheel road test two weeks after starting. This is done in-house with a DTA bus, authorized tester, and paid for by the DTA.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to stand intermittently, sit in a confined space for an extended period of time, walk intermittently, push and pull 15 to 25 lbs, bend, kneel, stoop, extend arms to reach bus controls and equipment, twist and turn waist, shoulders and neck, climb stairs and move both legs to reach brake and accelerator pedals and turn signal controls.
