Job Description
The Dry Dock Machinist performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving dry-dock pumps, valves, capstans, winches and generators. The candidate will have general knowledge of equipment operation for assembly, installation and testing; records work performed, performs periodic maintenance and follows specified safety policies and procedures.
Required Skills and Education
This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a First-class mechanic in the Facilities (Dry-dock) shop. A first-class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.
Advanced knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them independently and teach others how to complete the tasks. This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks. A First-class mechanic also is expected to strategize independently, and problem solve as appropriate.
  • General Machinist Knowledge
    • Use of measuring devices (rulers, micrometers, tapes, etc.)
    • Use of trade hand tools
    • Use of power tools (electric drills, saws, grinders, drill presses, etc.)
  • Blueprints
    • Read advanced blueprints
  • General Knowledge of Dry-dock Systems
    • Ballast Piping
    • Services Piping
    • Diesel Generators
    • Hydraulic Winches and Capstans.
  • Stationary and Portable Power Tool Operation (1 of the following)
    • Electrical
    • Pneumatic
    • Hydraulic
  • Valve Overhaul and Maintenance
    • Use of operation valves
    • Remove and replace valves
    • Perform general maintenance on valves
  • Reach Rods/ Valve Operators
    • Knowledgeable regarding the different parts to include rods, universal joint, hand wheels, etc.
    • Set reach rods and valve operators up for operation
    • Perform general maintenance
    • Repair and overhaul as appropriate
  • Ballast Pump Overhaul and Maintenance
    • Knowledgeable about pump overhauls and parts
    • Assist with the removal and installation
    • Perform general maintenance
  • Deck Machinery
    • Proficient in the application and parts of the following types of deck machinery:
      • Winches
      • Capstans
    • Perform repairs, cleaning, removal, installation and maintenance of deck machinery
  • Ballast Operations
    • Perform ballast operations on both dry-docks with minimal assistance.
    • Perform record keeping of dry-dock ballast operations.
  • Maintenance Record Keeping
Perform record keeping of dry-dock maintenance logs and discrepancy reports with minimal assistance.
