Kanawha County Public Schools Application for the transportation position identified below shall constitute written consent by the successful applicant to any changes required to more efficiently meet the transportation needs of Kanawha County Schools or students. Changes may involve morning, evening, and mid-day runs or other assigned duties. Consent may not be withdrawn at a later time. This is a safety sensitive position which is subject to drug and alcohol testing requirements. Bus Operators, Bus Monitor Aides, and Supervisors will be required to wear uniforms.
POSITION: Bus Operator/Clerk
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR : Terminal supervisor
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
EMPLOYMENT TERM: Minimum 200 days annually
SALARY : Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with Kanawha County Salary Scale, Pay Grade D3 commensurate with experience and education level.
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and KCS's Guide to Performance Evaluation for Service Personnel.
JOB SUMMARY : Performs basic clerical duties requiring some analysis.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Job Duties
  • Performs basic clerical duties requiring some analysis.
  • Prepares payroll, monthly reports cirricular and extra trip requests.
  • Collects and disseminates data (student locations, helping establish pseudo addresses, school data, boundaries, etc.).
  • Schedules routing information.
  • Maintains files.
  • Types correspondence and routine reports.
  • Maintains terminal facilities.
  • Makes recommendations to the supervisor concerning schedules and routes.
  • Decides if student action warrants discipline from higher official.
  • Decides if vehicle is safe to operate and also whether repairs are needed to prevent a breakdown.
  • Follows all rules and regulations stated in the WV School Transportation Regulations document provided by the State Board of Education.
  • Receives permission from building principal/supervisor to work in excess of 40 hours per week.
  • Attends in-services and workshops as directed.
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations and uses prescribed personal protective equipment.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c; Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b;
  • Demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test) as required.
  • Previous bus operator experience preferred.
  • Required to have current CDL and valid first aid, CPR, and state certification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The temperatures range from hot in summer to cold in the winter. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderately loud (20-90 dB).
