Position Overview:
The Director of Donor Engagement plays a key leadership role on the Development team, managing donor communications, high-impact stewardship and fundraising events, alongside donor outreach and relationship-building efforts. This role is ideal for a project manager with a marketing background, who understands donor stewardship and enjoys organizing high-touch events that build lasting donor relationships.
This position will report to the Director of Development, and owns the full lifecycle of donor-facing content—ensuring that everything donors receive is compelling, accurate, timely, and aligned with Atlas Network’s voice and values. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and project manager who understands donor stewardship, values cross-team collaboration, and is energized by connecting directly with supporters to strengthen relationships and encourage giving.
This position is based in Arlington, VA , and in-person candidates are strongly preferred to foster collaboration across departments and facilitate live donor events. However, exceptional remote candidates with outstanding qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Key Responsibilities:
Donor Communications & Content Strategy (50%)
- Develop and maintain an evergreen donor communications and event calendar to ensure consistent engagement across all donor segments (small, mid-level, major, and legacy).
- Serve as the final approver for all donor-facing content, ensuring messaging is compelling, consistent, and donor-centered.
- Manage the direct mail program end-to-end—including list segmentation, production schedules, vendor coordination, testing, and performance analysis—to maximize donor retention and acquisition.
- Personally draft or supervise the creation of other donor-facing content as needed:
- Fundraising appeals (print and email)
- Email series (including helping the CEO with Insider Updates and monthly Atlas Club Briefings)
- Personalized stewardship messages and thank-you letters
- Invitations and follow-ups for donor events
- Tailor content to various donor types, ensuring that each segment receives mission-driven, relevant, and timely outreach.
- Collaborate with the Communications team to align tone, visuals, and messaging with the Development team’s goals.
- Leverage data alongside the Director of Customer Acquisition to refine messaging and assess effectiveness of campaigns and communications.
Donor Outreach & Stewardship (25%)
- Conduct proactive outreach to donors and VIPS as needed, and work alongside the Major Gifts Officer and Donor Operations Manager to cultivate, steward, and retain support current donors and prospects.
- Respond to donor inquiries and ensure timely follow-up and good customer service.
- Track touchpoints and relationship-building activity in Atlas Network’s CRM (Salesforce) to ensure a coordinated donor engagement approach.
- Serve as a representative of the Development team at events and meetings with donors and partners.
- Foster strong cross-functional collaboration with Major Gifts, Prospect Research, Operations, and Executive Leadership to deliver a seamless donor experience.
Donor Event Planning & Execution (25%)
- Plan and manage donor-focused events, including:
- City Club events
- Atlas Network Experiences
- Exclusive donor experiences during Liberty Forum & Freedom Dinner (including major sponsors)
- Oversee event logistics as needed - timelines, venues, guest lists, communications, and on-site coordination.
- Work with the Major Gifts Officer and Director of Development to personalize experiences for key donors.
- Collaborate with the Development Operations Manager to track attendance and report on event impact.
- Prepare pre- and post-event communications that reinforce donor appreciation and deepen engagement.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in nonprofit donor relations, direct mail fundraising, communications, or related fields (experience in a leadership capacity preferred).
- Proven track record managing direct mail campaigns and strategy.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and content strategy skills; ability to craft persuasive, donor-centered messages.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholders.
- Proficiency with donor CRM systems (Salesforce preferred) and tracking multi-channel donor engagement.

- Availability to travel domestically (and internationally, if required) for donor events and engagement.
- Candidates must be based in the United States and eligible to work in the U.S. without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
