Position Summary

Our client, a leading chemical manufacturer, is seeking an experienced Senior Process Safety Engineer to strengthen and lead site-wide Process Safety Management (PSM) programs. This role is central to protecting people, the environment, and business continuity by ensuring the safe operation of complex chemical processes.

Working at the intersection of engineering, operations, and risk management, the successful candidate will act as the site’s process safety subject matter expert—providing strategic guidance, technical leadership, and hands-on execution of critical safety initiatives. This position requires a proactive, analytical thinker with strong influencing skills to drive a robust safety culture throughout the organization.

Reporting to the site leadership team, the Senior Process Safety Engineer will work closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, capital projects, and corporate EHS resources, and may also represent the site in wider industry or professional forums.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Technical Leadership

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of plant-wide PSM systems in line with best practice and corporate standards.
  • Partner with R&D and pilot plant teams to prepare SOPs for new or improved products.
  • Drive initiatives such as Management of Change, PHA/LOPA facilitation, and risk assessment programs.
  • Anticipate emerging process risks and implement effective controls and contingency measures.

Operational Execution

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA 1910.119, EPA RMP, CCPS Risk-Based Process Safety, and applicable local regulations.
  • Integrate process safety considerations into capital projects and plant modifications.
  • Conduct hazard analyses and promote inherently safer design principles.

Stakeholder Engagement & Influence

  • Act as a trusted technical authority and catalyst for change in process safety.
  • Influence and coach operational and engineering teams to elevate safety ownership.
  • Mentor engineers and site personnel to develop in-house safety expertise.

Performance & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead root cause investigations for process safety incidents and implement preventative measures.
  • Track, analyze, and report leading and lagging PSM performance metrics to site and corporate leaders.
  • Contribute to client-wide process safety knowledge-sharing and benchmarking.

Candidate Profile

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 7–10+ years of process safety experience in the chemical manufacturing sector.
  • Strong knowledge of hazard analysis methods (e.g., HAZOP, LOPA), process design, and safety instrumented systems.
  • Familiarity with specialty chemicals, batch processing, or reactive systems preferred.
  • Experience with risk assessment tools, process modeling software (e.g., PHAST, ALOHA, or similar), and regulatory compliance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CCPSC, PE, or equivalent certification highly desirable.
  • Expertise in reactive chemistry and runaway reaction prevention.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for hazard identification and mitigation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration and training.
  • Detail-oriented with proven ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
