A leading heavy civil construction firm headquartered in Virginia is seeking an experienced Vice President of Estimating to oversee and drive strategic leadership in its preconstruction efforts. The company has a long-standing reputation for delivering complex infrastructure projects, including highways, bridges, marine work, site development, and large-scale civil infrastructure.
Role Overview
The Vice President of Estimating will provide executive leadership for all estimating functions across the organization. This individual will ensure the development of accurate, competitive, and strategic bids for a wide range of heavy civil construction projects. The role includes managing the estimating team, standardizing systems and processes, and working closely with executive leadership on key project pursuits and business development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead estimating efforts for heavy civil projects ranging from $10M to over $1B
- Manage and mentor a team of estimators and preconstruction professionals
- Oversee bid strategy, quantity takeoffs, subcontractor/vendor coordination, and risk assessment
- Implement and maintain standardized estimating procedures and technologies (e.g., HCSS, HeavyBid)
- Collaborate with executive leadership on major project pursuits and client strategies
- Cultivate strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and industry partners
- Stay current on market trends and competitive intelligence
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (PE license or advanced degree preferred)
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in heavy civil estimating, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role
- Deep expertise in DOT, design-build, and large-scale infrastructure projects
- Strong understanding of construction means/methods, unit pricing, and cost analysis
- Proficiency in industry-standard estimating software and digital takeoff tools
- Proven leadership, communication, and strategic decision-making skills
- Residency in Virginia or willingness to relocate is required
