The Estimating Manager, Structural Steel leads the estimating team and holds overall responsibility for the creation and accuracy of project budgets and estimates. This role oversees the entire estimating process, including tools, systems, and resources for all bid and awarded projects.


About the Role

Reporting directly to the Vice President - Preconstruction, the Estimating Manager, Structural Steel works closely with the Sales and Project Management teams to oversee department standards for all deliverables including bid packages, change orders, etc. The Estimating Manager oversees, manages, and develops all estimating resources including estimators, software, etc. to support projects ranging from fully defined (conventional Design-Bid-Build Projects) to conceptual (alternative procurement such as Design-Build/Assist Projects).


Responsibilities

  • Manage/schedule estimating resources to support all deadlines.
  • Determine Lead Estimator for each bid and change order.
  • Review all bid documents including plans, specifications, scope, schedule, etc. to coordinate with Lead Estimator and assure complete scope/price.
  • Prepare and assist with conceptual budgets based on minimal information $/SF, $/Ton, etc.
  • Establish procedures to ensure the flow of project information is maintained and documented.
  • Oversee review and scoping of specialty contractor bids.
  • Maintain and communicate data on construction and material cost trends affecting project costs.
  • Analyze alternate means and methods to determine the most economical alternative.
  • Build effective relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Review/approve final recap with Lead Estimator and Sales/Project Management for completeness and accuracy.
  • Review/approve As Sold recap with Sales prior to formal issuance.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.


Assist Sales

  • Preparation of professional/complete bid proposals including exclusions, clarifications, etc.
  • Turnover/Kick-off to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted transition from Sales to Operations.
  • Completion of As Sold recap.


Assist Project Management/Operations

  • Preparation of professional/complete change order proposals including exclusions, clarifications, etc.
  • Change order negotiations.
  • Establish shop budgets for specific sequences, scope, etc.
  • Establish sublet budgets for specific sequences, scope, etc.


Qualifications

  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to capitalize in all computer software programs used in estimating with particular emphasis on BlueBeam, Tekla Power Fab Suite, and Tekla Models.
  • Possess strong mathematical and computer skills.
  • Proficiency with all MS Office products with particular emphasis on Excel, Teams, and Word.
  • Ability to break down construction operations into a logical sequence of activities.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate teams to work towards common goals.
  • Must be able to thrive under pressure while managing and meeting deadlines.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and people skills.
  • Good attention to detail with the ability to recognize trends and discrepancies.
  • Ability to multi-task.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, Administration, or equivalent related work experience.
  • Minimum of 10 or more years of estimating with STRUCTURAL STEEL industry experience.
