Job Summary:

We are seeking an Accounting Policy and Reporting Lead (APRL) who will report to the Controller of SGH and Ceres Life. The APRL will assist the Controller in the development of accounting policies to guide SAP, GAAP and IFRS reporting for SGH and Ceres Life. The position will also be responsible for the development of quarterly and annual SAP financial statement disclosure for Ceres Life, as well as quarterly and annual GAAP and IFRS reporting for SGH and Ceres Life. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting skills, experience working in a controllership function, and knowledge of the insurance industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain the accounting policies of SGH and Ceres Life, with a focus on compliance with all applicable accounting and financial guidelines and regulations.
    • Function as an internal technical expert on accounting standards developed by the NAIC, FASB and IASB.
    • Monitor and analyze changes in accounting standards that could impact SGH and Ceres Life, whether effective or proposed.
    • Monitor and analyze changes in accounting and reporting guidelines of the Texas Department of Insurance, as the domiciliary state of Ceres Life.
    • Research new accounting issues and considerations that arise from business strategies, as necessary.
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual internal reporting and analytics around financial results and position of SGH and Ceres Life, for presentation to management.
  • Develop quarterly and annual SAP reporting packages and financial statement disclosure for Ceres Life.
  • Develop quarterly and annual GAAP and IFRS reporting packages for SGH and Ceres Life, to support financial disclosure by The Westaim Corporation (TSX: WED).
  • Partner with Information Technology function to standardize and automate reporting and analytical packages.
  • Ensure all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for financial reporting are complete, accurate and kept up to date.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have proven experience working in a controllership environment.
  • Have a strong understanding of the annuity business and its accounting.
  • Have demonstrated management skills.
  • Exhibit a good systems ability and understanding of process flows and controls.
  • Work well within a team, with the ability to communicate at all levels.

Job Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelors degree in accounting; CPA and / or MBA designation a plus.
  • 5 - 7 years relevant experience in a controllership function.
  • Life insurance and annuity industry experience a plus.
  • Public accounting and / or accounting policy experience a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience with accounting systems and financial reporting software; knowledge of Oracle and Clearwater systems a plus.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Initiative-taker with effective communication abilities and ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic start-up environment.
