PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The purpose of the Associate Underwriter of Commercial Lines is to demonstrate the fundamentals of underwriting and contribute to the achievement of effective and profitable Branch Underwriting results according to Company Goals and Guidelines. This role will assist and support the Underwriting Department in providing customer service, and underwriting within authority, to policyholders, agents, and brokers. This role will establish collaborative relationships with agencies and producers to understand the external marketplace and underwrite within established guidelines. This role will evaluate less complex business for risk acceptability, matching price to exposure, loss frequency, and severity for profitability, and rating plans/modifications for renewal retention.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Advances knowledge of underwriting principles and processes.

  • Successfully completes formal and on-the-job training provided by line of business management in specialty area of Underwriting.

  • Demonstrates the ability to evaluate fundamental risk, make sound Underwriting decisions, and perform basic customer service and marketing activities.

  • Works within established authority to underwrite less complex business and to effectively evaluate and price.

  • Demonstrates and applies understanding of laws, rules, and regulations governing Underwriting business for specialty area.

  • Demonstrates and applies knowledge of line of business procedures, guidelines, and Underwriting systems.

  • Collaborates with other departments as appropriate including Claims and Risk Management to become familiar with standards, requirements, and reporting.

Delivers superior customer service through the development of collaborative relationships.

  • Responds to follow-up activities pertaining to policyholders including research, correspondence, data entry, updating files, tracking documentation and mailing.

  • Responds to coverage inquiries of new business and policy changes involving moderate analysis and recommendations.

  • Represents the department in cross-functional project teams as requested.

  • Works with underwriter to establish collaborative relationships with agencies/producers to understand the external marketplace.

Under supervision develops a profitable book of business.

  • Sells and services a producer force that can sell and control a profitable and growing book of business.

  • Drives profitable sale of the Company's products including increasing sales of existing products and introducing new products as they are developed.

  • Attains a thorough knowledge of the geographic territory assigned regarding production sources, competitor activity, and economic and demographic idiosyncrasies.

  • Accepts or rejects simple risks, evaluating all risk characteristics (operations, financials, management, employees, prior experience, etc.) as compared to the average in its class and price for profit within Company Underwriting guidelines.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This role does not have supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree required with emphasis in Business, Accounting, Statistics or related field.

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as an Underwriting Assistant or related experience in Underwriting preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

None required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Ability to service the Company's clients and maintain relationships with production sources.

  • Ability to apply fundamental Underwriting concepts, practices, and procedures in area of specialization.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as submissions, loss control reports, and standard policy form/endorsements.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Office environment no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands and employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear. Requires travel, usually limited to automobile. Requires regular visits to outside locations such as producer's offices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in an office environment and requires the frequent use of a computer, telephone, copier, and other standard office equipment.

The current range for this position is

$68,481.25 - $115,489.01

This range is exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses. If hired at ICW Group, your final base salary compensation will be determined by factors unique to each candidate, including experience, education and the location of the role and considers employees performing substantially similar work.
