About the role

The Underwriter will evaluate and analyze the creditworthiness of loan applicants in accordance with company policies, guidelines, and risk assessment standards. This role requires strong attention to detail, financial analysis skills, and the ability to make sound, data-driven decisions. The Underwriter will work closely with loan officers, processors, and management to review and approve loans efficiently and responsibly.

What you'll do

  1. Evaluate and analyze loan applications, financial statements, collateral reports, and other relevant documentation to assess risk and creditworthiness.
  2. Make loan approval or decline decisions within designated authority levels and provide recommendations for exceptions.
  3. Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with company policies, procedures, and applicable lending regulations.
  4. Collaborate with loan officers and processors to gather additional information and clarify any discrepancies.
  5. Conduct risk assessments and identify potential areas of concern related to borrower eligibility, loan terms, and collateral.
  6. Accurately document underwriting decisions and maintain records for audit and compliance purposes.
  7. Communicate loan decisions, conditions, and rationale to internal stakeholders and, as necessary, to borrowers.
  8. Stay up to date with industry trends, lending regulations, and best practices in underwriting.
  9. Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and process improvement initiatives to enhance underwriting performance.

Qualifications

  1. Experience: A minimum of three years of experience in underwriting, collateral analysis, or a related role within the lending industry.
  2. Proficiency in reviewing and interpreting automated valuation models, financial statements, background, and credit reports.
  3. Strong understanding of lending regulations, credit policies, and risk assessment principles.
  4. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  5. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain underwriting decisions clearly.
  6. High level of attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  7. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
