The Opportunity
The Associate Underwriter provides administrative, electronic submission activity, and customer service support to the Wholesale Insurance operations, Dealers, Agents, and Ally Representatives. The Associate Underwriter is responsible for accurate and timely processing of new and renewal insurance submissions, documenting and resolving customer inquiries. Location: hybrid role in Detroit, MI or Schaumburg, IL.
The Work Itself
- Process dealer application requests accurately and promptly into the business system.
- Provide responsive service to customers regarding quotes and policy issuance status.
- Explain product components and coverage details of existing policies (e.g., False Pretense, Comprehensive, Collision).
- Communicate with agents and dealers about policy and program provisions. Assist Underwriting Teams with endorsement processing, policy issuance, loss history entry, and flood map information generation.
- Handle incoming calls and direct them appropriately.
- Submit policy documentation to the Surplus Lines filing company on time and accurately.
- Support and train team members on underwriting processes.
- Review reports to ensure team meets key performance metrics.
- Act as subject matter expert in projects aimed at process or technology improvements.
- Resolve complex issues within the team.
- Lead Underwriting Assistant efforts on large group accounts.
- Delegate tasks and participate in projects.
- Participate in renewal underwriting processes.
The Skills You Bring
- At least 1 year of experience as an Underwriting Assistant or in Property & Casualty Underwriting.
- 3+ years in financial services or related functions preferred.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Customer service experience required.
- Insurance experience preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong phone communication skills.
- Customer-focused with professional demeanor.
- Effective follow-up skills.
- Reliable attendance and positive attitude.
- Strong PC and data entry skills, proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
