Job Description

As a

Senior Software Engineer

on the

Content Services

team, you will play a critical role in building and evolving the core backend services that power NBCUniversal’s digital experiences across web, mobile, and OTT platforms. These services manage and deliver digital content—articles, video metadata, editorial data, and more—at scale and in real time.

You’ll work on high-performance, reliable APIs built using

Java, Go, GraphQL

, and

REST

, ensuring robust content delivery systems that are foundational to our digital products. You’ll collaborate with product managers, designers, SREs, and other engineers to build software that is efficient, scalable, and easy to maintain.

You will contribute not only through strong code, but also through mentorship, architectural input, and a commitment to engineering excellence and team growth.

Responsibilities

Leadership

Partner with product, analytics, and design to define clear, practical requirements

Mentor junior engineers through design and code reviews, pairing, and onboarding

Promote engineering best practices across the team

Identify and solve systemic team issues that impact productivity or quality

Participate in and help guide conversations around technical direction and media industry trends

Champion a user-first mindset, advocating for solutions that enhance content performance and editorial experience

Technical

Design and deliver end-to-end services that handle digital content such as articles, video metadata, and editorial assets

Build and maintain APIs using Java, Go, GraphQL, and REST

Ensure systems are scalable, performant, and secure under real-world traffic and constraints

Promote test coverage, code quality, and secure development practices

Drive adoption of reusable patterns and help evolve platform capabilities

Debug, profile, and optimize across multiple layers of the stack

Participate in RFCs and provide thought leadership on service architecture and API design

Collaborate with SREs to ensure services are observable and production-ready

Delivery

Scope large initiatives and epics; break down complex problems into actionable tasks

Proactively communicate risks, timelines, and blockers

Balance competing priorities from editorial, product, and platform teams

Support the team in achieving realistic delivery timelines while maintaining code quality and sustainable velocity

Communication & Collaboration

Partner across content, video, data, and UX teams to define and deliver cohesive content experiences

Participate in all levels of technical hiring to help scale the team

Create and maintain documentation for critical systems

Communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Actively participate in post-incident reviews and cross-team discussions

Must-Haves:

Strong server-side engineering experience in large-scale, high-availability environments

Strong experience in

Java

and

Go

(Golang)

Experience building and scaling

GraphQL

and

REST APIs

Deep understanding of service design, API modeling, and distributed systems architecture

Familiarity with

digital content systems

—CMS, metadata, content delivery, video delivery

Proven ability to write secure, maintainable, and testable code

Experience working in agile teams with strong delivery and collaboration practices

Strong understanding of observability (logs, metrics, tracing) and performance tuning

Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills

Preferred:

Experience in the media or publishing industry

Familiarity with content modeling, media taxonomies, and editorial workflows

Exposure to content delivery networks (CDNs), caching strategies, or video streaming architectures

Contributions to open-source projects or published technical writing

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience

Hybrid:

This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.

Salary range: $155,000-$175,000
