At Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center, we are dedicated to building and managing advanced research computing systems that empower scientific discovery and improve pediatric care. The Systems Engineer I Linux Administrator will support the design, integration, and operation of computing infrastructure that enables highly available research web applications, proactive support, and collaboration across diverse research domains.
As we continue to modernize our internal platformsincluding the launch of a new systems monitoring toolthis role offers an exciting opportunity for early-career systems engineers to gain hands-on experience in a mission-driven environment. You will join a collaborative team supporting cutting-edge research initiatives, contributing to both the implementation and ongoing evolution of infrastructure and services that shape the future of healthcare innovation at CCHMC.
This role will operate in the Research Computing group within the Information Systems for Research (IS4R) division. The person hired for this position will support Red Hat Enterprise Linux based systems which support web, database, and various research applications. This role is expected to be able to perform troubleshooting, monitoring, deployment, and configuration of such systems. Automation of routine tasks is expected using scripting and configuration management tools. Excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary as we interface directly with researchers on projects via email and incident management systems.
Project Management
Collaborate in the design, development, and implementation of new and enhanced application requests to meet organizational needs. Identify and allocate appropriate resources for small to mid-sized projects, ensuring effective execution. Act as a liaison between internal and external teams, facilitating communication on project-related issues and developments. Participate in the creation and management of detailed project plans, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met. Assess the scope and complexity of projects and contribute to project planning and resource allocation. Work cross-functionally with multiple teams to ensure project goals align with organizational priorities.
System Analysis & Design
Engage in analyzing, designing, implementing, and maintaining moderately complex systems that enhance clinical care and patient management. Participate in system testing, document outcomes, and contribute to the refinement of system functionality. Design and develop technical solutions to address operational challenges and system requirements. Prepare comprehensive user and technical documentation to support system deployment and usage. Analyze existing documentation and provide enhancements or corrections to improve clarity and accuracy. Follow the development lifecycle process, including operating procedures and documentation, to ensure the success of system solutions.
Technical Support
Provide technical support and problem resolution for production and process issues, ensuring minimal disruption to operations. Troubleshoot and interpret error messages, identifying resources needed to resolve minor to mid-sized issues effectively. Utilize change control processes to implement system solutions and mitigate future issues. Serve as a resource for other departments, acting as a liaison between Cincinnati Childrens departments and Information Services. Contribute to departmental efforts aimed at improving customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. Monitor system performance to identify potential issues and support future development or feasibility studies. Participate in on-call support rotations, addressing incident resolution and problem determination during designated hours.
End-User Support
Ensure exceptional end-user support, monitoring Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for incident management and resolving issues efficiently. Collaborate with other teams to ensure customer-centric incident management and issue resolution. Promote adherence to change management policies and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness. Exemplify excellent customer service behavior, including prompt and thorough follow-ups with customers. Uphold Cincinnati Childrens service standards (Courteous, Attentive, Respectful, Enthusiastic, and Safe - CARES) when interacting with clients and colleagues.
Professional Development
Continuously develop knowledge and professional skills through cross-training, attending relevant literature, and participating in department meetings and vendor education. Foster and maintain positive relationships with internal teams and external partners. Motivate team members, encouraging collaboration and teamwork to achieve departmental goals. Prepare and deliver oral and written presentations on various topics related to technical initiatives. Conduct and participate in instructional seminars to improve knowledge-sharing within the department. Develop expertise in several Cincinnati Children's computer-based systems to enhance support capabilities.
Job Qualifications
Bachelors degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 0+ years of experience in a related job discipline, with a willingness to learn and grow in a technical support environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience imaging and building RHEL based servers 2+ years of experience in a related job discipline Experience with monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana Experience with containerization tools such as Docker Experience with Puppet/Satellite/Ansible or related config management tool Experience configuring LDAP, DNS, Apache, networking, storage, services and logging on RHEL based systems. Experience troubleshooting issues with these systems. Server and data center hardware knowledge Experience with systems patching, firewalls, analyzing logs
