The Office of the Governor is seeking a full-time, unclassified Deputy General Counsel. We offer a comprehensive benefits package and a competitive annual salary based on education and experience.
Position Summary
The Deputy General Counsel will work under the direction of the General Counsel. The lawyer will perform many functions including planning, organizing, and monitoring legal activities and interpreting laws and regulations; providing legal advice, counsel, and assistance to the Governor, his staff, state agencies, and the Governor’s Cabinet. The lawyer will be expected to work under minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment in legal issues large in scope, complexity and activity. The lawyer will support other lawyers and staff, as needed. Given the time remaining in the Governor’s term, this position presents a great opportunity for an early career attorney similar to a judicial clerkship. The successful applicant will gain a wealth of experience at the highest level of state government and across a very diverse range of issues that will serve the attorney throughout his or her career.
Position Responsibilities
The specific functions of this position vary, but may include the following:
Analyzes complex factual and legal issues and prepares legal opinions, memorandums of fact and law and other legal documents. Assists in the development, preparation, and presentation of cases before administrative, state, federal, and appellate courts. Evaluates complex legal issues and provides advice, counsel, and assistance to staff on legal matters. Assists in drafting bills and amendments for legislative consideration, completes reports on changes in legislation, evaluates proposed legislation and makes recommendations for Gubernatorial action in response thereto. Performs legal research and reports findings and conclusions. Advises on law, regulations, and opinions of the courts; prepares or directs the preparation of interpretations outlining facts and the applicable legal, administrative or executive decisions. Reviews and advises on agency rulemaking actions. Performs related work as assigned. Supports other lawyers and staff, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited law school. Licensed to practice law in the State of Oklahoma or eligible to become licensed by October 1, 2025.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong analytical, research, and writing skills. Self-starter able to take initiative on tasks and see them through to completion without reminders or extensive supervision. An inquisitive mind, eager to take on interesting and complex challenges. Experience in or demonstrated knowledge of state or federal government.
