John Evans Recruiting is conducting a search for a Director of Audit and Attest for our client, a highly unique 60-employee CPA/consulting firm in the Baltimore area that does not believe in billable hours. Their alternative approach to public accounting is focused on a fixed fee annual model, where businesses are served holistically by multiple service lines of the firm. This organization has built an incredible culture internally and is excited to hire this next future leader of the firm. After one year of service, our client will offer this Director the opportunity to become an Owner of the firm, along with seven other owners. The Director of Audit & Attest will lead a department of 3 accountants, overseeing the quality and effectiveness of all audit and accounting projects. The Director will have the mandate to elevate and grow the department through team mentorship, business development, and collaboration across internal departments of the firm. While our client has offices in Maryland, they are open to hiring a fully remote candidate in EST/CST time zones. Job functions: Preparation of Audit and Attest projects. Quality Control Review on Audit projects. Involvement or management of the firm’s Peer Review. Effective management of projects and engagement teams. Client facing communication- project management, project deliverables, and identifying client needs. Responsible for developing annual revenue targets for the department. Build referrals through clients and other sources to grow a revenue pipeline. Develop the business unit’s annual priority with a clear objective and measure of success and quarterly milestones. Scope and price agreements to meet firm’s target profitability target. Conduct after action reviews on projects. Build training and CPE plan for workgroup. Attend industry conferences and stay abreast of changes to the industry and client needs and requirements. Oversee department’s Lean Six review each year. Requirements: CPA required. 7-15+ years of experience working in a CPA firm. 3+ years of people management experience, to include review of others’ work. Experience auditing a variety of commercial businesses is required. Experience auditing nonprofits and/or employee benefit plans is required. Experience working with clients and teams in a fully remote setting. Extreme comfort around technology and awareness of new technology available to the department and the industry as a whole. Proven success with business development. Desire to have autonomy and strategic influence to grow the team and scale the department. Looking for professional and personal growth including possible participation in executive team and/or ownership. Nice to have: Direct people management including performance evaluations, regular coaching meetings, and developing team members. Business development/sales experience and success in driving revenue including firm services beyond Audit and Attest. Independent management of a firm’s Peer Review. Experience building processes to increase efficiency and take advantage of new technology. Experience auditing government contractors is a plus. Seniority level
