Position Overview: This role focuses on the mechanical design of next-generation battery packs, from architecture definition to production at volume. About the Role – You will: Lead design of battery subsystems, modules, and component systems from concept through launch Contribute to architecture decisions with a focus on cost, mass, lifetime performance, and manufacturability Define subsystem specifications and collaborate on requirements development Collaborate across engineering functions to define interfaces and ensure robust integration across mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems

Scroll down for a complete overview of what this job will require Are you the right candidate for this opportunity cell engineers, modeling engineers, systems engineering, battery electronics engineering, test engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, program management, supply chain, and other cross-functional teams Identify technical risks and mitigation plans; design DOEs, prototypes, and test plans to validate concepts Lead root cause investigations and resolution of failures from builds, launch, or field Develop 3D CAD and 2D drawings using GD&T for complex parts and assemblies Manage part life cycle and engineering change orders Create supporting documentation (DFMEA, 8D, compliance, etc.) Mentor junior engineers and help grow technical capability across the team About Our Group: We are part of the battery technology team, developing cutting-edge battery packs that meet aggressive cost, energy density, and manufacturability goals. You will report to the battery pack engineering manager and work closely with colleagues in our Burlingame CA R&D center and Greer, SC production facility. Your Experience Includes: 8+ years of mechanical design experience with meaningful contributions to battery systems BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; MS or relevant specialization is a plus Deep technical experience in one or more of the following areas:

Thermal runaway mitigation in battery systems Dispensed dielectric materials application (potting) Electrical interconnects, bussing, short circuit performance, and associated analyses Structural design under crash and abuse loads Thermal management of batteries

Proven track record of leading design from concept to production across multiple product cycles Experience supporting suppliers and manufacturing partners through design, tooling, and process development Strong background in design for high-volume manual and automated assembly Proficient in 3D CAD, 2D Drawings (including GD&T); 3DX or CATIA V5 Preferred; FEA experience a plus Ability to influence architectural decisions, establish best practices, lead technical direction, and communicate complex concepts at management levels Strong communication skills and experience working across systems, test, supply chain, and quality Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and leading technical development Designed and assembled in the United States, Proterra’s innovative battery platform offers industry-leading energy density, durability, performance and safety systems – enabling Proterra EV batteries to be the premium choice for commercial vehicles and industrial equipment Proterra’s battery technology offers industry-leading energy density, safety systems, and durability.
