The
Chief Scientific Officer
will serve as the senior scientific leader of the organization, overseeing the Research Department. This individual will ensure the alignment of scientific priorities with institutional goals and foster innovation in research. They will be responsible for guiding and mentoring Principal Investigators (PIs), ensuring a nurturing environment for trainees, advancing interdisciplinary collaboration, and driving the development of impactful research initiatives. The Chief Scientific Officer will also have the secondary role of VP of Academic Affairs, leading and administrating Coriell’s Faculty Program, in conjunction with the President/CEO, Finance, Human Resources Office, and the Coriell Faculty Committee. Essential Duties and Accountabilities: The Chief Scientific Officer will be responsible for the following areas within the Institute: Strategic Leadership and Program Oversight Lead recruitment efforts to expand the Research Department by 5-10 investigators in the next 5 years Lead mentorship efforts to help career development of the Principal Investigators and trainees in that department Define and implement strategic leadership for the Research Department including but not limited to ensuring advanced/new technologies are integrated into ongoing and future research Research and Development Lead a vigorous and externally funded lab conducting groundbreaking research consistent with the Institute’s priorities Promote translational research to bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical applications Encourage entrepreneurship across the Institution by promoting patenting and licensing of inventions as well as formation of new biotechnology companies Partnerships and Education Work closely with the President/CEO, External Affairs, Principal Investigators, Research Office, and HR to identify new potential partnerships within Higher Education and working with the cross functional groups listed above to implement and launch said new partnerships Oversee and ensure contractual obligations are being met with current/legacy partnerships, growing or sizing down when appropriate
Funding and Operations Work closely with Finance and Facilities to ensure proper resource and infrastructure allocations that help support the operations of Coriell’s Research Department Ensure compliance with ethical standards and regulatory requirements, in close conjunction with the Coriell Research Office Ensure Principal Investigator budgets remain within allowed allocations, working with Principal Investigators when they have concerns on over/under spending their funding sources Hold Principal Investigators accountable for new, existing, or potential grant funding to ensure laboratories can be financially self-sufficient Education: PhD, MD, or equivalent degree in a relevant biomedical science field Experience: Extensive experience in academic research, preferably over 10-15 total years Experience working in an academic and/or non-profit setting is strongly preferred. While Industry experience is appreciated, it is not our preferred experience. The preferred candidate’s scope of research should be focused on cancer research, oncology, or a similar area of expertise A strong record of scientific publications A strong history of securing research funding, including multiple active externally funded grants Competencies Needed: Leadership skills in both small and large groups of individuals Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal Organizational skills with an ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams The role will be considered a Coriell Institute for Medical Research employee, and will have access to Coriell's Benefit Package, which includes: 20 Days of PTO, 11+ Paid Holidays, 7 Sick Days per year 7% monthly employer contribution to a 401(a) plan, in accordance with ERISA regulations Access to Medical, Dental, Vision benefits Employer-paid LTD/STD Plans, and Life Insurance Policy (2x Salary, max at $450K) All candidates must submit the following to be full considered for this role: Cover Letter, summarizing current funded research Up-to-Date CV
