Dinsmore is seeking a Chief Business Development Officer.
This is an executive level role that realizes the potential of the firm’s high-quality practices in the national legal marketplace. The CBDO is responsible for driving market awareness for the firm’s core practice groups, as well as for those sectors in which the firm is a market leader in the delivery of legal services. This role is hands-on, collaborative, and grounded in helping Practice Group leaders identify growth opportunities and creating actionable business development and marketing plans to grow revenue.
The CBDO is also responsible for the firm’s marketing activities to raise the profile of practices and sectors. This includes management of marketing strategy, overseeing the handling of events, sponsorships, website content and business development operations to support practice development. The role also includes oversight of branding, client targeting, proposals and media.
This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer and will have a close working relationship with the Managing Partner, Business Development Committee, Department Chairs, Practice Group Leaders and leaders of the firm’s industry initiatives, to build out and execute measurable, time-based objectives designed improve market profile, aligned with the firm’s overarching brand & growth objectives.
Responsibilities
Provide strategic business development advice and insights to Executive Committee and Board focused on expanding client relationships, generating new business leads, and developing growth programs for the Firm Support the coordination of regional business development activities and events in accordance with the annual budget. Conduct market analysis to understand key developments that shape clients’ industries and the legal profession, sharing insights internally with Practice Group leaders and Partners Assist Practice Groups and Partners in the development and implementation of Business Development plans, tracking progress against quantifiable objectives (e.g.: new client attainment, revenue growth, portfolio expansion, etc.) Develop and promote internal BD training programs for Practice Groups and Partners on pricing negotiation, cross-selling existing services, and regional business development. Lead the advancement of our Marketing Technology programs including but not limited to Client Relationship Management (CRM), external communication software, and Website re-design. Develops a strategy to drive market awareness for the firm’s core practice groups, as well as for those sectors in which the firm is a market leader in the delivery of legal services. Works with firm leaders ensure that key practices and industry groups have compelling value propositions and content with which to market. Aids firm leadership to build a strong market profile and on-line presence Builds and develops a team of professionals, capable of executing on the strategies set for prioritized practices and sectors. Leads and takes a hands-on role in the creation of compelling content to differentiate the firm’s offerings by practice and industries and highlight the depth of its client base, while supporting business and client development efforts to identify and pursue new sources of work. Ensure that prioritized groups have up-to-date practice descriptions, deal/transaction information, client testimonials, attorney bios and external website content. Sets the strategy for events and sponsorships undertaken by the firm, particularly major events such as the firm’s annual client CLE day. Monitors the execution and return on investment delivered by the firm’s events and sponsorships. Proactively suggests new technologies to increase audience engagement and market impact. Works collaboratively with other Chief Officers to support all firm administrative functions. Provide insight and marketing-related support for key Firm Committees such as the Business Development Committee, Recruiting & Retention Committee, Diversity Council, Women’s Initiative Committee, etc. Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Undergraduate degree required, preferably in Marketing or related fields. Post-graduate degree preferred. JD or prior professional services industry experience preferred. Minimum of ten years’ related experience, preferably in a corporate/professional services environment. Strategic and critical thinker who is interested in trends, best practices and innovation. Genuine interest in business and business trends and an ability to align these with an organization’s strategic direction. Excellent written and oral communication/presentation skills. Ability to multi-task and work under pressure on a large number of initiatives simultaneously. Flexible mindset with an ability to focus on and achieve short and long-range goals. Experience in dealing with highly intelligent and demanding clients at a senior level. Leadership with the ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, leadership, vendors and marketing teams.
