Summary/Objective

The Pharmacy Intern is responsible for performing pharmacy distributive functions that include are but not limited to: delivering medications to nursing units, answering telephone calls, unit-dose packaging medication, preparing IV medications using aseptic technique (when IV Certified), and restocking automatic dispensing cabinets.

Essential Job Duties

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Makes nursing unit rounds and delivers labeled medications, controlled substances, and pharmaceutical supplies. Answers telephone and provides information as requested or refers questions to appropriate personnel. Responsible for unit-dose packaging the bulk medications into unit of use, and accurate documentation of the function. Also, performs reconciliation of patients on I.V. therapy in the hospital and prepares admixtures utilizing aseptic techniques when IV certified. Fills drug replacement orders to various departments accurately and maintains par levels. Assist in managing inventory by but not limited to cycle counts, stocking shelves and notify any drugs that will be expiring or in need of ordering. Monitors and returns all expiring/expired meds throughout the hospital to pharmacy. Utilizes knowledge regarding the dispensing of medications/pharmaceuticals in performance of identified responsibilities. Maintains current knowledge of hospital and departmental operational policies and procedures which impact on position responsibilities.

Required Education and Experience

Enrolled in an Accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program

Required License/Certifications

Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) Pharmacy Technician and/or Pharmacy Intern License
