POSITION PURPOSE

This position’s purpose is to lead the CTL Operations Team with plants in Houston, TX, St. Paul, MN, and Toronto, ON. The position will be a key member of the Value+ Leadership Team, with sharp focus leading:

  • Safety performance
  • Efficient and cost-effective operations
  • Aligned operations to reduce unnecessary uniqueness
  • Review KPIs to align with our new business direction and capital investments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Safety and Environmental

  • Lead and coach the team to develop a “culture of safety”.
  • Develop the yearly Business Safety plan.
  • Ensure that all company safety practices and procedures are adhered to by all area staff and that the area meets or exceeds all safety objectives, including JSA/SOPs, safety meetings, required monthly inspections, housekeeping and other safety deliverables to continually drive safety improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.
  • In conjunction with Corporate Environmental establish and maintain ISO 14001 program. Responsible for resolution of environmental issues.
  • Direct plant responsibility for the CTL facility where the incumbent is located
  • Overall operational responsibility for all CTL operations and facilities; to include, leading, mentoring and developing CTL site leaders
  • Develop and manage the Value+ Operations capital expenditure plan.
  • Establish and publish Value+ Operations goals, KPIs, and manage the team to achieve them.
  • Review current equipment and propose replacement and upgrade action plans
  • Manage operations to include EH&S, quality, maintenance, engineering, purchasing, inventory, shipment, I.T. and human resource activities.
  • Enforce company practices and policies.
  • Interface with the workforce regarding safety, costs, productivity and scheduling.
  • Work directly with the Value+ Leadership Team and other cross-functional teams in support of Operations and business growth.
  • Support performance management of employees and development of talent to meet current and future requirements. Address and coach any performance issues with team
  • Insure that QA programs, practices and standards are followed and obtained. Lead development of any new QMS requirements.
  • In conjunction with the Vice President of HR, negotiate the contract of SSAB and the local Union in St. Paul.

Alignment

  • Gain alignment between the plants to reduce unnecessary uniqueness
  • Represent Operations in review, selection, and implementation of IT solutions, including an MRP/ERP, web shop, etc.
  • Work with Operations Managers to develop plans and execute to a high level of service model and quick delivery of customer orders
  • Develop parts burning and value-add processing QMS with QA

QUALIFICATIONS

Competencies and Experience

Required:

  • Minimum ten years of heavy industrial experience including three years of managerial experience. Experience participating in and managing industrial safety, environmental, and quality programs. Experience scheduling people and equipment. Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with employees, and management. A good understanding of production planning and maintenance systems to high-level computer skills; to include proficiency in Microsoft. Experience with developing and maintaining Department Budget. Experience in managing employees using a “Team” concept. Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining composure and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.

Preferred:

  • 15+ years of experience in production and manufacturing processes within the steel industry.
  • 3-5 years of experience in mill operations.
  • Experience with CTL and plate burning/parts cutting operations.

Education

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Engineering or related field.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Engineering or related field.
  • Continuous Improvement certification (Green or Black Belt);

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS

Position is responsible for the following;

  • Direct supervision of CTL Operations Managers (Houston and/or St Paul and/or Toronto)
  • Local facility leadership to include;
    • 1 - Operations/EH&S Assistant
    • 1 - Maintenance/Safety Supervisor
    • 2 - Scheduling/Shift Coordinator
    • 1 - Shipping Coordinator
    • 2 - Quality/Lab Technician
    • <30 – Shop Employees

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position operates in both the office and industrial environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment. This role is partially sedentary (average of 4 hours per day).

This position will often require work in the industrial environment with exposure to heat/cold, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, noise and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards.

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

  • Talking person to person, on the phone, and/or in group settings.
  • Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings.
  • Vision at near, mid, and far range.
  • Peripheral vision and depth perception.

The employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb.
  • Push, pull, lift, and/or carry items weighing less than 50 pounds.
  • Twist at waist level, reach above shoulder level, and reach at and/or below waist level.
  • Handle, grip, hold, and grasp with both hands together or separately.
  • Finger and feel with both hands together or separately; sense temperature and textures.

The employee will be required to sit, stand, and/or walk as follows:

  • Sitting 0-8 hours at a time; average 4 hours a day.
  • Standing 0-8 hours at a time; average 2 hours a day.
  • Walking 0-8 hours at a time; average 2 hours a day.
  • Alternate sitting and standing as needed.

The employee will be required to use the following machines or tools:

  • Desktop computer, database and control systems

The employee will work in the following conditions:

  • In extreme heat and extreme cold.
  • In wet and humid conditions.
  • Amid fumes, dust, dirt, and smoke.
  • Around equipment in motion.
  • Amid mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards.
  • Around industrial magnets.
  • While wearing safety equipment and/or clothing for protection from hazards.

POSITION TYPE – WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position is full time, exempt
  • Position works day shift, Monday through Friday – additional overtime, nights or weekend work as needed
  • Travel 5% of time (driving or by airplane) in the field or at other SSAB locations
