JOB SUMMARY:
This position is accountable for driving vehicles to transport students and passengers to local or distant points according to a time schedule.
SALARY RANGE:
Starting at $31.05/hr for 2025-2026
SIGN-ON BONUS:
Newly hired bust drivers will be eligible for a one time $2,000 sign-on bonus. Payment of the sign on bonus will be dependent on start time and will be paid in four equal payments. The sign-on bonus will not be included in an employees' salary calculations but will be considered credible earnings. The sign-on bonus will not impact an individual's placement on the bargained salary schedule. Sign-on bonuses will be taxed.
SAFETY BONUS:
Full time RLAS-116 Bus Drivers will be eligible for a quarterly safety bonus of $250. This safety bonus will be paid out to all drivers who do not have any preventable accidents in a quarter. Payment will be made in the pay period following the end of the quarter.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Applicants in this position are required to possess a High School Diploma, and a Class B, CDL air brake endorsed Illinois State Driver's License with an Illinois School Bus Driver's endorsement.
General Experience:
Four (4) years experience driving public service vehicles.
Special Experience:
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have included driving transit buses or over-the-road coaches.
Substitution Allowed:
Graduation from a vocational or technical school with coursework in automotive mechanics may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Considerable knowledge of traffic and motor vehicle laws and regulations;
  • Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and practices of automotive and equipment mechanics;
  • Interpersonal skills;
  • Oral and written communication skills;
  • Skill at and ability to operate a bus and other transit vehicles;
  • Ability to follow directions;
  • Ability to maintain records such as personnel records, inventories of supplies, maintenance schedules, route schedules, etc.;
  • Ability to plan effective and practical routes to specified destinations and/or follow prescribed routes;
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.
  • Complies with local traffic regulations and reports delays or accidents;
  • Debarks passengers and assists with off-loading;
  • Drives school buses and other vehicles, including but not limited to transit buses, over-the-road coaches, service plate vehicles, vans, passenger cars and other motorized conveyances;
  • Inspects vehicle being used and checks gas, oil, and water before departure;
  • Keeps records;
  • Makes daily or overnight trips;
  • Picks up passengers at specified areas and transports to destination;
  • Regulates heating, lighting, and ventilating system for passenger comfort;
  • Performs related duties as required.
