Ability to float as required. Experience with titrating drips. Description: The unit provides care for obstetric patients, including labor and delivery, antepartum, and postpartum care. There are 7 labor and delivery beds and 12 postpartum beds available. The unit handles an average of 643 births annually. Nurse-to-patient ratios follow established guidelines, with 1:1-2 in labor and delivery and 1:2-3 in postpartum. Common patient diagnoses include gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, and other pregnancy-related conditions. RNs are required to titrate drips such as Pitocin, Magnesium, and occasional Insulin. The charge nurse on each shift takes an assignment and participates in deliveries. Skilled nursing staff includes OB scrub techs, unit clerks, and occasional nursing students. Anesthesia and a 24/7 obstetric team are available for patient care. Monitor technicians are present for tele patients, but RNs are expected to read rhythms when needed. Each RN is responsible for basic troubleshooting of equipment and may assist with placing telemetry patches. Shifts are scheduled six weeks in advance, with considerations for sleep schedules. There is a requirement for every third weekend and holiday coverage as needed. Floating to various units may occur depending on patient needs. Surgical scrubs are provided for staff. High patient satisfaction ratings have been noted in the department. Additional time-off requests are minimized and must be presented upfront. A cancellation policy applies regarding shifts for the duration of the contract. The charting system used is EPIC. Bachelor of Science in Nursing is not required. This is a trauma level 2 care setting. Shifts rotate every two weeks.
