Rigger / Master Rigger

The Production Division within Brookhaven National Laboratory's Facilities & Operations Directorate provides mechanical, architectural, and civil services to build, support and maintain the Lab's infrastructure. Rigging Services seeks a Rigger / Master Rigger to join their team. This individual shall possess the skills necessary for the relocation of heavy machinery/equipment by attaching rigging to move, lift and/or hoist with cranes and/or forklifts; controlling movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces, using chain falls, pallet jacks, vault jacks, air mats or other equipment; dismantling, inspecting and storing rigging equipment after use. Expected to signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads, in order to ensure the safety of workers and materials; use hand signals and other means to direct crane operators and help guide the objects into place; and tilt and turn suspended loads to maneuver over, under or around obstacles, using multi-point suspension techniques. This position reports to the Multi-Trade Supervisor. The regular hours of operation/shift for this position are Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Load Preparation: Determine the weight and size of loads including determined the center of gravity Select appropriate rigging equipment (sling, shackled, channid, hoist, etc.) Inspect equipment for wear or damage before use. Rigging Setup: Safely attach rigging equipment to loads Secure loads for lifting or movement Evaluate load capacities and sling angles to ensure safe lifting. Lifting Operations: Knowledge and ability to signal crane operator or other equipment operator using standard hand signals or communication devices. Guide and control the movement of loads during lifting, hoisting, or moving operations. Coordinate with team members to ensure safe handling of materials. Safety Compliance: Adhere to health and safety regulation (e.g., OSHA, LOLER) Identify and evaluate all hazards for every task every time. Ensure safe rigging practices to prevent accidents or damage. Maintenance: Maintain and store rigging gear and tools properly Maintain records of inspections and certification for rigging equipment Documentation & Reporting: Engage in formulation lift plans and checklist. Report any safety hazards, incidents, or defective equipment to supervisors. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

High School or GED A minimum of 5 years prior rigging experience. Able to complete all the requirements of the Job Training Assessment. Knowledge of rigging tools, their capacities, and their limitations, in every lifting operation from routine to complex, and the ability to assess and implement proper rigging techniques used while moving or transporting an object of substantial weight or fragile composition. Must have a telephone and provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes. Possess good written and verbal communication skills, including: Ability to follow written instruction procedures, work orders, and similar documents. Possess the writing skills to sufficiently complete work orders and other required documents. Ability to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers, and supervisors Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Vocational school certification / 40-hour rigging class Possess a valid NYS Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tank (N) and hazmat (H) Endorsement and/or the ability to secure a valid NYS Class A CDL with air brake and tank (N) and hazmat (H) Endorsement. Environmental, Health, and Safety Requirements:

Must meet the medical requirements of BNL's Job Assessment Form, including but not limited to: Standing, bending and lifting. Able to do heavy lifting > 30 lbs. Able to work in confined spaces. Able to climb fixed and portable ladders. Able to work outdoors/cold environments and in warm environments. Able to work around moving machinery. Able to use power and air operated hand-tools. Able to operate fork trucks. Able to use respirator and other related safety equipment. Have good physical coordination, dexterity, and balance. Able to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection. Other Information:

The successful candidate will be placed at the Rigger (LG-7) or Master Rigger (LG-8) level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and certification. This is a Testing Designated Position. Employees in DOE-defined Testing Designated Positions (TDPs) are subject to drug testing, including pre-placement, random, reasonable suspicion, occurrence, post-accident, and follow-up drug testing. The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date. The Lab's placement policy is to select the best-qualified candidate for an available position. With respect to Bargaining Unit positions, candidates are considered in the following order: (1) present benefits-eligible employees within the department/division and/or appropriate bargaining unit, with preference for those within the immediate work group; (2) present benefits-eligible employees within the Laboratory; and (3) outside applicants. The starting pay rate for Rigger (LG-7) is $39.58 per hour.
