The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) at The Ohio State University welcomes applications for the Director of the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center. In alignment with the university's academic plan, the Hale Center aims to accelerate student success by providing social support programs that enhance students' belonging, leadership, and cultural engagement. Founded in 1989, the Hale Black Cultural Center (HBCC) is a hub for student activity and dedicated to student academic success. The center acts as a "third space," neither home nor work, that provides students with a sense of belonging and supports their intellectual and emotional well-being. It boasts an expansive collection of art works by Black artists, many from the Columbus area. Dr. Hale believed passionately that students would benefit academically, intellectually and emotionally by being surrounded by thought-provoking paintings, photographs and sculptures. Much of the work done by the HBCC Director will revolve around activating the collection, whether through curricular engagement, rotating exhibitions, faculty or guest lectures or hands-on art-making workshops. The Center also hosts signature initiatives, a student involvement fair, community dinners, and other activities. Such programming aims to promote intellectual and social engagement and a sense of well-being. The HBCC is open to every Ohio State student and invites all faculty, staff, and members of the university community to participate in its programs. It also seeks to engage Ohio State students with the broader Columbus community. HBCC facilities include a student lounge, computer lab, several classrooms, and meeting spaces for use by student organizations and campus partners. The Director is charged with developing, implementing and evaluating innovative programming that will sustain and grow HBCC's offerings for current and future audiences, as well as presiding over the Center's Art Advisory Committee, which is responsible for integrating the collection into curricular offerings and generally raising its visibility on campus and beyond. Through interactions with individual students and student organizations, the Director often serves as a resource and informal mentor to HBCC students, supporting their leadership and personal development. The Director will supervise a small team of three full-time staff members and recruit and develop a robust staff of undergraduate and graduate student assistants. The Director of the HBCC may also be called on from time to time to help with fundraising or grant-writing opportunities and will be tasked with maintaining strong alumni relations. The Hale Center and all of its programs, events and activities are open to everyone, without any restriction based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or any other protected class. Work in consultation with the Art Collection Advisory Board, the Campus Art Collection Manager, and the Vice Provost for the Arts, to steward the HBCC collection, advising on curricular engagements, exhibitions, conservation priorities, and the creation and maintenance of an archive, including both digital photographs and oral histories, that will eventually be made publicly available online; design programming specifically around the collection. 30%
Ensure HBCC operational excellence through staff supervision and budgetary oversight; liaise with the Office of Undergraduate Education, especially those offices and programs co-located in Hale Hall, to foster student academic success; serve as the Building Coordinator for Hale Hall. 20%
Design, implement, and evaluate innovative and timely programming less directly related to the art collection but nonetheless enhancing both extracurricular learning for Ohio State students and interactions with faculty and staff; generally, contribute to the sense of Hale Hall as a "third space," neither home nor work, that provides students with a sense of belonging and support. 15%
Encourage student leadership development among the Hale Ambassadors (student assistants) and by serving as a resource to student organizations that meet regularly in HBCC. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience. Five years of experience in student programming, special events, arts administration and/or community engagement. Proven record of successful project or program management. Proven ability to collaborate with stakeholders across a complex organization. Verifiable record of participating in form or informal mentorship programs. Preferred Qualifications Master's or doctoral degree in a relevant field of the arts, humanities, education or social sciences.
