Continuous General Definition of Work

The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the lab performing a limited number of standardized and routine tests, and to assist with immunizations, family planning, maternal health and child/adult health as assigned. Assist with other duties as needed or assigned. Collect clinical specimens including venipuncture and capillary sticks (finger & heel). Process patient specimens including centrifuging, serum separation, and store when necessary. Prepare specimens for mailing and transport to the State Lab or reference labs. Report patient results for lab procedures performed. Perform a variety of routine and less standardized test procedures, as well as operate less sophisticated instrumentation. Collect, examine, process, receive specimens from a variety of resources. Order laboratory supplies, stock incoming supplies in designated areas, restock supplies in lab, and rotate stock as necessary. Decontaminate lab work surfaces as needed. Red wet mounts and GC cultures as well as quality controls and document. Perform urine pregnancy test and urine dipstick. Read and record temperature and humidity daily. Perform sterility checks on GC cultures. Perform quality control testing and document. Perform related duties as required. Record all state lab tests in State Lab Logbook. Document lab test performed in patients' EMR. Follow-up with State Lab for any test results not received. Notify provider of any lab abnormalities. Participate in mass immunization clinics. Enter immunizations into NCIR. Participate in shelter rotation and recovery during hurricanes and other natural disasters. Assist in Immunization Clinic, Women's Health and Child Health/Adult Health as scheduled. Employee will perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing necessary to provide effective public health services. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education & Experience

General knowledge of applicable laboratory instrumentation and equipment; general knowledge of the test procedures performed in the laboratory; skill in the use of laboratory equipment and in the performance of procedures; ability to make accurate observations and written reports of test results; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Basic nursing skills and organizational skills; ability to secure the cooperation of patients to elicit information and maintain effective relationships. Graduation from a state accredited program of practical nurse education and one year of practical nurse experience, which includes advanced or in-service training in the area to which assigned or graduation from a state accredited program of practical nurse education including a pharmacology course, or completion of an approved pharmacology course upon graduation, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for the administration of medications required by the work setting. Individual must complete ICS/NIMS training. Licensed to practice as a practical nurse in North Carolina by the NC Board of Nursing. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina. This position is a safety sensitive position and subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with the Pender County Personnel Policy and Risk Policy. Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a very quiet location (e.g. park trail, storage or file room).
