Senior Associate Director of Scholarships

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships serves as the programming source to potential and current students for informational sessions regarding scholarship opportunities at Howard University. The department is dedicated to awarding the maximum number of scholarships available to the most deserving students while striving to be informative, responsive, resourceful, compliant, professional and sensitive to students, faculty, and donor needs. The Senior Associate Director of Scholarships is responsible for managing the Scholarship Team. Directs and oversees assigned externally funded programs for a university/college such as research programs and scholarship programs. Responsible for managing the administrative activities of the program including identifying funding sources, acquiring funding, setting program policies and objectives, and allocating resources. The position reports to the Deputy Director of Financial Aid and has internal and external contact with students, faculty, staff, student advocates, and representatives of government agencies, community organizations, legislative representatives, scholarship organizations, foundations, and the public. Principal Accountabilities: Directs scholarship administration, awarding, and operations for Enrollment Management and provide direct and operational support for scholarship awarding for academic schools and departments, partner scholarship programs, and enrollment management units. Assumes a lead role in the development and implementation, coordination and integration of the core functions which guide and support scholarship operations and policies within the Office of Financial Aid at Howard University. Works collaboratively with senior leadership in Enrollment Management, campus partners, colleagues at other campuses, and external partners to contribute to deliberations concerning priorities, modifications, customer service enhancements, and best practices. Provides departmental leadership for scholarship awarding systems (Banner, Blackbaud, Common Origination and Disbursement (COD), National Student Loan Database (NSLDS), Workday, Sharepoint, U.S. Department of Education systems and databases, and Colleague systems/tools to monitor, process and adjust scholarships as required), which award in excess of $175M annually. Core Competencies: Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define financial aid/scholarships methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority financial aid/scholarships projects/initiatives. Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase financial aid/scholarships initiatives. Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal. Manages high level assignments and allocation of financial aid/scholarships resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale financial aid/scholarships projects with a wide audience in support of academic initiatives. Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment. Researches and stays up to date on new industry financial aid/scholarships standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs. Works collaboratively with other financial aid/scholarships leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to set priorities and manage multiple high-priority tasks simultaneously. Competence in both oral and written English. Strong skills in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint). Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to financial aid/scholarships. Minimum Requirements: Master's degree required in a related field. 7 years of experience in accounting, student services, enrollment management, higher education student affairs, and financial aid or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Compliance Salary Range Disclosure Expected Salary Range: $80,000 - $97,000
