Has an understanding of all conventional aspects of architecture. With direction, performs a variety of assignments requiring skills in all conventional aspects of architectural design for projects of moderate size and complexity. With direction, performs analyses of design, planning and occupancy studies, limited design layouts, prepares project specifications, compiles and analyzes data, writes reports and specifications, and reviews completed reports, plans, estimates, and calculations. Level II:
Competent in all conventional aspects of architecture. With little direction, performs the same types of assignments as above, demonstrating more autonomy and initiative. Level III:
Proficient in all conventional aspects of architecture. Independently performs the above responsibilities and demonstrates a high degree of capability across all aspects of architectural design and documentation. Compensation Alignment Baseline compensation for each level will be aligned to the salaries listed for the corresponding AIA Architectural Staff Levels I, II, and III for the California Region, updated with each new AIA Compensation Report. Final compensation is based on skillset alignment with the position as determined by Studio Directors and Principal Architects.
All positions are non-exempt under California law. Supervision Hierarchy Position Responsibilities (Responsibilities scale with experience level as noted) Direct production teams, assign tasks, and allocate resources I: With PM/PA direction II: With little input from PM/PA III: Independently Facilitate communication among staff regarding project status, objectives, and performance Lead the production team to create, assemble, and issue client deliverables utilizing Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, or other media Identify project issues and develop solutions I: With general supervision and PM/PA input II: Independently under general supervision III: Proactively, with proposed solutions presented to PM/PA Train and develop junior staff Manage Construction Administration (site visits, document submissions, RFIs, shop drawings, submittals, etc.) I: With PM/PA involvement II: With minimal PM/PA input III: Independently Prepare, review, and check all construction documents for accuracy; coordinate with internal teams and external consultants Lead field survey teams as needed for as-built documentation Maintain, organize, and archive project files Demonstrate and apply knowledge of lighting, HVAC, structural, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical systems, as well as relevant codes including CBC and ADA Assist with other duties as needed (site visits, as-builts, code research, etc.) Develop project scope, schedule, and budget II: Contribute with PM/PA III: Draft independently for PM/PA review Knowledge of architectural detailing and construction standards I: General knowledge II: Strong knowledge III: Extensive knowledge Position Qualification Job Captain I Minimum of three years of professional experience Degree from a NAAB-accredited architecture program is preferred but not required General knowledge of the California Building Code (CBC), DSA, CDE processes, and construction processes Proficient with Revit, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and Outlook Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through Ability to multitask and manage several projects simultaneously Good oral and written communication skills, with an emphasis on producing documentation and reports Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team, taking direction from Project Managers and Engineers Job Captain II Minimum of five years of professional experience Degree from a NAAB-accredited architecture program is preferred but not required Strong knowledge of the California Building Code (CBC), DSA, CDE processes, and construction processes Proficient with Revit, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and Outlook Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through Ability to multitask and manage several projects simultaneously Good oral and written communication skills, with an emphasis on producing documentation and reports Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team, taking direction from Project Managers and Engineers Job Captain III Minimum of eight years of professional experience Degree from a NAAB-accredited architecture program is preferred but not required Extensive knowledge of the California Building Code (CBC), DSA, CDE processes, and construction processes Proficient with Revit, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and Outlook Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through Ability to multitask and manage several projects simultaneously Good oral and written communication skills, with an emphasis on producing documentation and reports Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team, taking direction from Project Managers and Engineers Seniority level
