Casual-Hour Laboratory Support Technician

The Casual-Hour Laboratory Support Technician at UPMC Hamot plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations and ensuring efficient patient care. This flexible position requires one weekend per month with no holiday shifts, making it ideal for candidates seeking work-life balance. Preferred candidates will hold a clinical lab-related degree and have an interest in laboratory science. Technicians enjoy working in what many inspectors call the "nicest lab in Pennsylvania," with panoramic views of the Bayfront and city skyline. Working closely with technical staff, this role ensures timely specimen processing and instrument support, contributing to accurate diagnostic outcomes. It's a perfect opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative and patient-centered environment. In this role, there is opportunity to: Perform all duties of a Specimen Processor, including receiving, sorting, and preparing specimens for analysis. Answer phone inquiries and investigate specimen status or report disposition. Direct callers to appropriate resources for additional support. Deliver specimens to designated work areas to support timely analysis. Demonstrate a service-oriented approach through respectful and enthusiastic communication. Conduct basic instrument maintenance and document performance per established protocols. Record and monitor temperatures as required for quality assurance. Assist with restocking and inventory management of lab supplies. Maintain organized storage for room temperature, refrigerated, and frozen items. Prepare and replenish instrument reagents to support uninterrupted testing operations. Required: High School diploma or equivalent, and at least 2yrs experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) required in a clinical lab, Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least 1yr of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification and 1yr of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, Successful completion of a 50wk U.S. military medical laboratory training course, B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in a biological or clinical laboratory science Currently enrolled in a MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 yrs college credits Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: Medical Laboratory Assistant MLA (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
