CDM Smith (a privately held, employee-owned firm) is seeking a strategic, hands-on, and results-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead our global financial operations. The CFO will be a key member of the leadership team, responsible for shaping and executing financial strategy, ensuring fiscal integrity, and driving sustainable growth across our global engineering and construction services. This position is based in a metropolitan area on the East Coast of the United States. Candidates must either currently reside on the East Coast or be willing to relocate to preferably Boston, MA or southern Florida. Responsibilities include: Managing, leading, developing, and mentoring high performance teams in the finance, accounting, and procurement functions. Fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement. Developing and executing financial strategies and programs aligned with corporate goals. Reviewing and approving the execution of business strategies for the firm services and programs. Providing executive management with advice on the financial implications of business activities and providing consultative support to planning initiatives through financial and management information analyses, reports, and recommendations. Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with senior executives to identify their needs and seek a full range of business solutions, providing accurate and relevant advice. Advising the CEO and Board on financial planning, risk management, and capital structure. Developing and evaluating short- and long-term strategic financial and operating objectives for the Company, in line with overall business strategy. Formulating and implementing finance, accounting, and procurement programs, policies, and procedures, effectively cascading to the senior financial management to ensure achievement of financial objectives. Overseeing global budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and financial reporting. Ensuring compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and internal controls. Providing recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities. Directing and overseeing all aspects of the Finance & Accounting functions, ensuring healthy financial management at business unit and subsidiary levels. Ensuring credibility of the finance function by providing timely and accurate analyses of budgets, financial trends, and forecasts. Leading the company stock ownership program and policy in accordance with appropriate guidelines. Leading individuals in the CFO function including finance, accounting, procurement, payroll, treasury, tax, operational finance, and real estate. Evaluating and advising on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action. Working with the CEO and executives to identify potential new business opportunities/sources of revenue. Supporting business units with financial modeling and scenario analysis. Managing and minimizing the company's financial risk exposure by developing and maintaining systems of internal controls, and ensuring that the finance, accounting and internal audit and risk management functions are operating effectively. Leading enterprise risk management and internal audit functions working with executive management and the Board of Directors. Leading and being accountable for all regulatory compliance and ethical financial practices. Identifying and evaluating M&A opportunities, joint ventures, and capital investments. Seeking and identifying opportunities to enhance the firm's financial position and management of financial actions. Minimum qualifications include: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field. 20+ years of related experience with 8 of those years in a direct executive capacity (i.e., CFO or similar capacity). Domestic and/or international travel may be required. Preferred qualifications include: Experience in a AEC environment (i.e., engineering and construction), and/or professional services industries is highly desirable. Experience in a privately-held and/or employee owned organization in a AEC or professional services industry. Experience in the full life-cycle of federal and municipal contracting compliance, including knowledge of FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation) and related regulatory frameworks within each entity. Current CPA certification. Skills and abilities include: Proven ability to develop and execute complex financial strategies and operations in a global or multi-entity environment that support business growth, shareholder value, and long-term sustainability. Deep knowledge of corporate governance frameworks, enterprise risk management, compliance, and internal controls. Strong commercial acumen and business insight with the ability to translate financial data into actionable recommendations to support strategic decisions. Demonstrated expertise in M&A strategy, due diligence, valuation, negotiation, and post-merger integration. Advanced use of analytics and tools to monitor project performance, cash management, backlog forecasting, and working capital optimization across large-scale programs. Proven inspirational leader who builds high-performing teams, fosters collaboration, and promotes a culture of continuous improvement across all facets of the organization.
