Salary to be determined commensurate with qualifications and experience. Performs responsible entry level inspection work in ensuring compliance with established codes governing the following areas of construction discipline: mechanical and plumbing. Performs inspections for materials and installations; interprets, applies, and enforces rules and regulations relating to the construction of new buildings, and the repair of existing buildings. Responsible for reviewing plans and specifications for new construction, alterations, and repairs. Checks plans and specifications for proposed installation to ensure the codes and ordinances have been followed. This position is part of a Career Ladder Program (Inspector I-Inspector IV) which provides advancement opportunities for inspectors who desire to expand their knowledge and responsibilities as they continue their careers with York County. The ability to advance to the next level through certifications as a combination inspector is encouraged. Graduation from high school, and one (1) to three (3) years of direct building construction inspection experience, or related practical experience in building construction; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Applicants with five (5) years of direct building construction inspection experience, or related practical experience in building construction; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, a valid certification as a Residential and Commercial Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector, and knowledge of building codes related to the area(s) of assignment may be considered for hire as a Building Inspector II and at a starting base salary of $48,547. Requires thorough knowledge of plumbing and mechanical codes and the ability to interpret code requirements to detect deficiencies requiring corrective action. Familiarity with electrical and structural codes desired. Must complete the Code Academy and requisite tests for the certification(s) relevant to Plumbing/Mechanical within 18 months of hire date. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with good driving record mandatory. Conducts appropriate plumbing and mechanical inspections on residential and commercial buildings. Mechanical/Plumbing: Rough-in inspection of mechanical and plumbing materials, equipment and systems prior to concealment; Final inspection of mechanical and plumbing materials, equipment and systems; Other inspections as directed. This position is considered to be essential (County designation as ALPHA). In the event of an emergency/inclement weather conditions, the incumbent is expected to remain at the worksite or to report to worksite in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures, or as notified by a supervisor. DMV records check conducted prior to employment. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including copiers, levels, measuring gauges, two-way radios, smart phone, laptop computer, desktop computer, tablet devices, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Work involves a great deal of walking, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, and stooping while performing inspections. There is occasional crawling involved when inspecting work in attics or crawl spaces.
