Performs skilled and technical work requiring driving an ambulance or other emergency medical vehicle, rescuing or extricating victims, and administering basic emergency medical care to them both at the scene and during transport to a hospital. Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Tasks: Checks condition and functions of all vehicle systems and equipment at start of shift. Checks inventory and expiration dates of all medical supplies in med boxes and vehicular storage compartments. Responds to emergency calls for medical assistance as either the driver, or the attender. Evaluates situation upon arrival on scene and prioritizes patient treatment/rescue activities. Institutes basic life support activities on scene if functioning as the attender. Assists the paramedic (EMT III-P) in providing advanced life support activities such as cardiac monitoring when the patient requires higher levels of treatment and care. Transports patients to the requested or appropriate medical facility. Resupplies unit with necessary medical supplies before placing unit back in service. Completes all manual and computerized forms and reports, such as Ambulance Call Report, Driver Checksheet, Attendant Checksheet, etc. Performs general base duties such as washing vehicles, cleaning the bay, cleaning and waxing floors, etc. Participates in both ongoing and special training classes on new techniques, advanced techniques, new equipment, new medicines or drugs, new protocols or standing orders, etc. Studies street and road maps and networks for most efficient routes to possible emergency call locations. Working knowledge of a variety of emergency medical procedures and techniques. Working knowledge of a variety of medical supplies, drugs, solutions, and equipment used in emergency medical care. Working knowledge of city and county geography and the location of roads and streets within the county. Working knowledge of 2-way radio communications equipment. Skills in diagnosing and treating patients in need of emergency medical care. Ability to respond quickly and calmly to emergency situations. Ability to safely drive an ambulance at high rates of speed. Ability to lift and manipulate substantial weights in the performance of duties, whether patients, equipment and tools, or medical supplies. Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and firmly with patients, family members, and bystanders. Ability to work closely and appropriately with co-workers, law enforcement personnel, and other on-scene staff. Ability to work a shift schedule of 24 hours on, and 48 hours off duty. EMT Advanced/Intermediate Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age. High school graduate or GED required. Certified as a North Carolina Advanced EMT or eligible to obtain North Carolina Advanced EMT certification through reciprocity. Must maintain a valid DMV operator's license. For consideration for full-time employment, candidates must be enrolled in a paramedic education program and eligible to be credentialed as a NC Paramedic within two years, or complete Guilford County's Paramedic Certification Program within one year of enrollment.
