Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive Geographic Information Systems (GIS) support to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), enabling geoscientists and other staff to collect, use, analyze, and share spatial data effectively. The GIS Specialist will play a key role in supporting the department's mission to protect and restore the environment by ensuring that spatial data is accurate, accessible, and integrated into scientific and regulatory decision-making processes. Additionally, the GIS Specialist will provide training and technical assistance to staff across the department to expand the effective use of geospatial technology in field data collection, spatial analysis, and reporting.

How does it get done?

- Utilizing desktop and laptop computers, mobile devices, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receivers to perform spatial data collection, analysis, and cartography - Using low code platforms (drag and drop websites) to create web maps and apps - Training other staff in the use of geospatial technology for data collection and analysis - Coaching staff in the proper applications and publication of spatial data

Who are the customers?

- New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment - Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations - Internal staff

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following: - Being skilled in the use of desktop geographic information systems (GIS) software for data editing, analysis, and cartography - Collecting field data using global positioning systems (GPS) receivers or mobile devices - Using general office software, such as word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation software proficiently - Possessing another complementary skill, such as web map development or database programming

Minimum Qualification

Associate Degree in Geography or related degree and two (2) years of experience in geospatial data management. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course certification.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Occasional in-state travel is required for meetings, conferences, or training, seldom field work. Must able to lift 25 lbs.
